Dr. Weller is a retired neuropathologist renowned in his field for his expertise in Alzheimer's disease. He currently holds the title of professor of neuropathology emeritus at the University of Southampton, a position he has held since 2003. He served the University of Southampton School of Medicine as a professor of neuropathology from 1978 to 2003, and held a number of administration positions, including Deputy Dean over the course of his career. He was also an active member of a number of committees with the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, where he served as Clinical Service Director for Pahology. Additionally, Dr. Weller also acted as a consultant neuropathologist at the Wessex Neurological Center at the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust from 1973 to 2003. Aside from his work with the University of Southampton, he served as Postgraduate Regional Advisor in Education for Pathology in Wessex 1994 to 2003 and National Speciality Advisor for Neuropathology for The Royal College of Pathologists 2000-2003; he was a lecturer to British Young Scientists Groups from 1990 to 1995. He has also held a number of lectureships on topics related to his expertise.

Dr. Weller graduated from Guy's Hospital with a Bachelor of Science in anatomy, with honors, in 1959, ,Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in 1962, Ph.D. in pathology in 1967, and a doctorate in medicine in 1971. He continued his medical training as a postdoctoral fellow in neuropathology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1967. As a medical student, Dr. Weller developed an interest in the study of the nervous system and initially focused his research on peripheral nerves. He spent a period of time in the United States working alongside Robert Terry and Henryk Wisniewski, and this experience led to his interest in how the brain handles fluid and solutes. He began working on hydrocephalus and then on how fluid and amyloid are eliminated from the brain. His research in neuropathology is now well recognized in the field, especially his contributions to the study of multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease.

Dr. Weller was an Editor of "Muscle Disease: Pathology and Genetics, Second Edition," "Neurodegeneration: the molecular pathology of dementia and movement disorders, Second Edition," co-author of "Diagnostic Pathology of Nervous system Tumours," "Pathology of Peripheral Nerves" and Author of "Atlas of Neuropathology." He acted as the editorial board member of 12 international journals and has published over 200 articles in professional publications. He also applied his expertise in the field as editor-in-chief of the Journal "Neuropathology & Applied Neurobiology," and later as consulting editor; as the series editor of a various publications with the International Society of Neuropathology from 2007 to 2013, and as the editor of "Clinical Neuropathology" and "Systemic pathology-Neuropathology."

Dr. Weller served as President of the British Society of Neuropathology and a Vice President of the International Society of Neuropathology. He also served the Medical Research Council as chairman of Steering Committees for Huntington's Disease Transplants, the IOP Brain Bank in London, Brains for Dementia Research and CFAS. He is also chairman of the Biomedical Grants Advisory Board of the Alzheimer's Society. and has served as a member of multiple other organizations over the course of his career. He is a member of the International Society of Neuropathology, the American Association of Neuropathology, the Swiss Society of Neuropathology, the French Society of Neuropathology, and the German Society of Neuropathology. His civic engagements include acting as an assessor of research grants with the Medical Research Council and the Ministry of Health in Germany and as an adviser in neuropathology with the government of Singapore.
