Johnson, Ed.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Driven by a lifelong desire to become an educator, Dr. Johnson began working as a Sunday school teacher when she was just 18 years old. She went on to attend Clark University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in 1955 and Master of Education in 1957. While completing formal education, Dr. Johnson began working as director of education at a church. Although she initially aspired to become an interpreter for the United Nations, Dr. Johnson eventually chose to focus on teaching young children. She received a Doctorate in Education from Boston University where she was President of Pi Lambda Theta Honor Society in Education.

While serving as an assistant professor of education with Worcester State College, Dr. Johnson completed an Ed.D. through Boston University in 1977. For nearly two decades, she served the university in a wide range of capacities, including as a professor, coordinator of student teaching and chair of the department of education. During this time, Dr. Johnson maintained involvement with the People's Church in Worcester as a member of the pastoral committee and Christian education committee.

Throughout the course of her career, Dr. Johnson has been continually recognized for her contributions to the field of education. She is noted as a former member of the advisory board at a local school, as well as the former president of the Massachusetts Association of Teacher Educators. In 2004, Dr. Johnson was selected to receive the Key to the City, an award which included having a street named in her honor. She also received a Distinguished Service Award from the Clark University Alumni Association in 2005.
