A retired certified clinical cytogeneticist and PhD medical geneticist, consultant, and teacher, Dr. Howard-Peebles enjoyed a very rewarding career in the field for more than five decades. After spending the first year of her career as a science and history teacher in the Piedmont Public Schools in Oklahoma, she transitioned into working in the field as a biochemical technician at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee from 1964-1966, and in academia as an instructor of research pediatrics and cytotechnology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in 1971. Working in various capacities since that time, she served as clinical cytogeneticist at the Genetics & IVF Institute in Fairfax, VA, between 1987 and 2000 and was a freelance genetic/cytogenetic consultant from 2000 to 2017. She also directed cytogenetic laboratories and taught at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, the University of Alabama in Birmingham, and the University of Southern Mississippi. During her time in VA, she was an adjunct professor in the department of human genetics at Medical College of Virginia, Richmond.

Throughout her tenure, Dr. Howard-Peebles spent seven years as a genetic consultant for the Ellisville State School in Mississippi, was an attending staff member in the department of pathology at Parkland Memorial Hospital in the Dallas County Hospital District for six years, and served on various committees, including the scientific advisory committee for The Fragile X Foundation and as a member of the International Standing Committee on Human Cytogenetic Nomenclature.

Dr. Howard-Peebles authored many peer reviewed articles and chapters in books and was a reviewer for several professional journals, including the American Journal of Human Genetics, the American Journal of Medical Genetics, Clinical Genetics and Human Genetics during her career. She is also an elected fellow and founding member of the American College of Medical Genetics and longtime member of the American Society of Human Genetics, the Association of Genetic Technologists, the American Cytogenetics Conference and the Texas Genetics Society, where she previously served as chairman of the planning committee for the 1984 annual meeting.

Earning a Bachelor of Science in education from the University of Central Oklahoma in 1963, and a Ph.D. in zoology-genetics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1969, Dr. Howard-Peebles then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the department of human genetics at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor between 1969 and 1970, followed by a second postdoctoral fellowship in the department of human genetics and development at The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University between 1970 and 1971. Married to Thomas M. Peebles (1975-2013), she has been cited in more than 50 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
