With more than 30 years of professional experience, Dr. Jonasson has served as a senior research scientist with the Saskatchewan Research Council since 2012. In this role, he is currently testing surfactants and steam additives for use in thermal enhanced oil recovery, and he also researches mechanisms of petroleum recovery. Prior to obtaining his current position, he worked in private research from 2002 to 2012, as a research chemist for Vulcan Performance Chemicals from 1998 to 2002, and as a research officer with the Alberta Research Council from 1989 to 1998.
Dr. Jonasson was interested in scientific research from an early age; as a child, he would get into the medicine cabinet and mix the medicines together. Though his father was a machinist who wanted him to follow in his footsteps, Dr. Jonasson considers him a mentor who helped develop his scientific curiosity. He studied at McMaster University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in 1980, going on to earn a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Western Ontario in 1986. From 1986 to 1987, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow with McMaster University, staying on as a research associate with the school until 1988.
A respected voice in the industry, Dr. Jonasson is affiliated with numerous professional organizations. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Society of Petroleum Engineers. In addition, he has contributed several articles to professional journals, is an inventor in the field, and has written a book chapter in "Advances in Lignocellulosics Characterization." Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Jonasson enjoys studying history, medicine and philosophy, and is a silviculturist and oenophile.
