A celebrated figure in the education industry, Dr. Kanet has accrued more than 50 years of professional excellence in his areas of expertise. A professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Miami since 2014, his primary focuses are on post-communist Europe, global security, democratization and nationalism, and U.S. foreign and security policy. In addition to his primary role, Dr. Kanet has been professor emeritus of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign since 1997, having held several positions with the school from 1973 to 1997, acting as associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, director of international programs and studies, head of the political science department, visiting associate professor, associate professor, and full professor. Earlier in his career, he served as an assistant and associate professor of political science at the University of Kansas from 1966 to 1974.

To prepare for his illustrious career, Dr. Kanet sought formal education, first obtaining a Bachelor of Philosophy from Berchmanskolleg – Pullach bei München in Germany in 1960. He then returned to the United States, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Xavier University in 1961, followed by a Master of Arts in international relations from Lehigh University in 1963. He subsequently achieved a second Master of Arts in 1965, as well as a Doctor of Philosophy in politics in 1966, from Princeton University.

Alongside his professorship, Dr. Kanet is a prolific author and researcher, contributing more than 200 journal articles and book chapters and serving as editor for more than 30 books in political science, including "Russian Foreign Policy in the 21st Century," "The New Security Environment: The Impact on Russia," and "A Resurgent Russia and the West: The European Union, NATO and Beyond." He is currently working on a handbook on Russian security.

As a leading expert in his fields of interest, Dr. Kanet maintains affiliation with several professional organizations, including as a former member of the American Association of the Advancement of Slavic Studies, the International Studies Association, where he served as chair of the American-Soviet Relations section from 1990 to 1992, and the International Council for Central and Eastern European Studies, where he was the program chair for the First World Congress and member of the program committee of the First, Second, and Seventh World Congresses.

In recognition of his exceptional accomplishments, Dr. Kanet has been awarded numerous accolades throughout his career. In 1976, he was the recipient of the U.S. Department State Research Award, and he was honored with the Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1981 and 1984. In addition, he was presented with the Faculty Achievement Award at Illinois by the Burlington Foundation in 1989 and the U.S. Institute Peace Award in 1991. Furthermore, he was a fellow of the National Defense Education Act from 1963 to 1966, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in 1976, and the Federal Institute for Eastern European and International Studies in 1988. Finally, he has been a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, New York, since 1991.

Interested in Russian politics from an early age, Dr. Kanet was introduced to the world of Russia after reading "War and Peace" by Leo Tolstoy as a high school freshman. Despite winning numerous awards, he is most proud of the progress of his former doctoral students, of whom he has mentored more than 50. Married to Joan Edwards since 1963, Dr. Kanet is the proud father of two children, Suzanne Elise Kanet Zelle and Laurie Alice Kanet Burhart.
