Darwin Eton MD, FACS Honored for Advancing Research in the Management of Vascular Disease

Dr. Eton is a Distinguished Fellow of the Society of Vascular Surgery

Dr. Eton is pioneering a new approach to the management of Vascular Disease.

CHICAGO IL, April 10, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Darwin Eton MD, FACS, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Eton is an internationally known Vascular Surgeon who is pioneering a new approach to the management of Vascular Disease. The cell therapy project was the winner of the 2016 Cures Within Reach Inc Competition, held in Chicago IL, across all disciplines in medicine. The treatment overcomes disease related obstacles impeding neovascularization (growth of new vessels). Early clinical evidence shows the approach is a less risky and more durable alternative to surgery and catheter based procedures. This is supported by proteomic and cytometry data, in addition to the traditional clinical, hemodynamic and angiographic evidence. Dr. Eton now serves as the Principal Scientist of Vasogenesis Inc, located in Boston, MA. This company was formed around this project to rapidly advance this therapy for Vascular Disease. This disease is the number one cause of death in the Western World. The diabetic population with limb threatening ischemia (poor blood flow) will especially benefit.

This transformative therapy originated as a result of Dr. Eton's training. He is an Alumnus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Chemical Engineering (1978) by the age of 20. The broad basic science education at MIT facilitated keeping abreast of advances in cell-, vascular-, and molecular- biology throughout his career. His chemical engineering training was particularly helpful in problem solving, particularly in the operating room. This broad foundation facilitated integrating findings from each field into an effective treatment solution to address the disease Dr. Eton had to confront daily in surgery, and in the clinics.

Dr. Eton's definition of the "Best Surgeon" is one that can analyze the patient's problem so well that he meets each patient's expectations. This includes realizing that the "books" are guidelines, but the patient is a unique individual with unique "boundary" conditions and "initial" conditions that need to be factored into a therapeutic plan. Dr. Eton operates on only one out of every ten patients he manages.

Dr. Eton was Professor of Surgery at University of Chicago, Chicago IL, until he left academia in July 2015. He served as Professor and Chief of Vascular Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and Jackson Memorial Hospital (1999-2007). Prior to that he was Associate Professor at the University of Southern California (1994-1999). He was Assistant Professor at University of Illinois at Chicago and Chief of Vascular Surgery at Cook County Hospital, Chicago IL (1991-1994). He was the First Endovascular Surgery Fellow in the US, at UCLA, Westwood CA in 1990-91. He completed his 2 year Vascular Surgery Fellowship at University of Illinois Chicago (1988-1990).

Dr Eton's interest in Medicine and in research started in his freshman year (1974) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge MA. He was assigned to a research project at the Massachusetts General Hospital investigating artificial heart implantation in calves.

Since 1988 Dr. Eton has had an ongoing active funded research program, receiving federal grants (NIH, VA), numerous foundation grants (e.g. American Heart foundation), and corporate grants (e.g. Johnson and Johnson Inc). He has presented his research internationally, and has published in the lead peer review journals in Vascular Surgery and in Medicine. He has been the lead editor of Vascular Surgery books and book chapters. He is a Distinguished and Key Reviewer for the Journal of Vascular Surgery, the lead publication internationally. He has been the featured speaker at named lectures locally and abroad.

Dr. Eton helped pioneer Aortic Endograft technology, to which he was introduced early on by Juan Carlos Parodi MD, the original innovator. Dr. Eton recruited Dr. Parodi to work with him the University of Miami, where Dr. Parodi remained until retirement. Dr. Eton designed and performed the first in vivo experiments with endografts suffused with vascular cells retrovirally engineered to deliver therapeutic proteins directly into the circulation.

Dr. Eton is a Board Certified clinically active vascular surgeon. He has had the privilege of working at the largest hospitals in the USA (Bellevue Hospital, NYC, NY; Los Angeles County General Hospital, Los Angeles CA; Cook County Hospital, Chicago IL; Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami FL) and University Hospitals (New York University, NYC NY; University of California Los Angeles Hospital, Westwood CA; University of Illinois, Chicago IL; University of Southern California Hospital, Los Angeles CA; University of Miami, Miami FL; University of Chicago, Chicago IL) and Veteran's administration Hospitals affiliated with these facilities, and outstanding private Hospitals (e.g. Baptist Health South Florida, Miami, FL). He presently has privileges in Chicago at Rush Affiliated Hospitals, Loyola's Macneal Hospital, and Tenent's Weiss Hospital, and in Champaign IL at Carle Clinic. He has performed an average of 400 vascular surgeries (open and endovascular) annually since he started as a surgical intern in 1982. He developed the interpretive software for Vascular laboratories at many of these institutions for hemodynamic clinical assessment.

Dr. Eton received the 1998 "Outstanding Physician of the Year Award" from the University of Southern California, and numerous teaching, research, and service awards. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and was appointed a Distinguished Fellow of the Society of Vascular Surgery. He is a member of many societies in medicine and science. He served as President of the South Florida Vascular Surgery Society.

Dr Eton has been married to Linda since 1988. Linda is an occupational Health Nurse at Presence Health in Chicago IL. They have a daughter Katherine who is a Chicago architect who graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design on the Dean's List with a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Architecture. Their son Ryan and his wife Emily just graduated from Harvard Medical School where they received the top award in Surgery and Ophthalmology respectively. They couple matched at their first choice, the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor MI, where they just started their residencies.
