Dr. Wood graduated from Stanford University with a Doctor of Philosophy and a Master of Science in aeronautics and astronautics in 1972 and 1969, respectively. He also holds a Bachelor of Science, with distinction, from Cornell University. Since 2009, Dr. Wood has held the title of principal engineer at the California Institute of Technology's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA. His career with the laboratory extends back more than 40 years, having previously acted as program manager from 2004 to 2009, tracking and navigation service system manager of the Deep Space Mission System Engineering and Operations Programs from 2003 to 2004, deputy leader of the Center of Excellence for Deep Space Communications and Navigation Systems from 2000 to 2003, deputy technical section manager from 1991 to 1999, technical manager from 1989 to 1991, technical group supervisor from 1981 to 1989, and a member of the technical staff from 1977 to 1981. He also held a number of academic roles at the institute, having served as a visiting associate professor from 1978 to 1984, visiting assistant professor from 1976 to 1978, lecturer in systems engineering from 1975 to 1976, and Bechtel instructor in engineering from 1972 to 1974. He began his career in the aerospace industry as a staff engineer at Hughes Aircraft Company in 1974, where he served for three years.

Aside from his career at the California Institute of Technology, Dr. Wood also has applied his professional expertise as a consultant in the field and has authored a number of articles published in professional journals. He is an associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, where he previously served as associate editor of the "Journal Guidance, Control and Dynamics," as a member of the technical committee on astrodynamics, and as chairman. He is a senior member of the American Astronautical Society, where he previously served as associate editor of "The Journal of the Astronautical Sciences," as a member of the space flight mechanics committee, and as chairman. Additionally, Dr. Wood is a life senior member of IEEE and an active member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Sigma Xi. For more than a decade, he was civically engaged with the Boys Republic in Chino Hills, CA, where he served as a member of the board of directors. He is also the former president of Los Solteros. In recognition of his professional success, Dr. Wood was featured in numerous editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in the World.
