Raymond Thompson, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Over the course of his career, Dr. Thompson has shared his expertise in the field in a variety of positions outside of academia.

He served the University of Arizona as professor of anthropology from 1956 to 1997, as head of the department from 1964 to 1980. He was director of the Arizona State Museum from 1964 to 1997. He previously was curator of the Museum of Anthropology and as assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Kentucky from 1952 to 1956. He began his career as a fellow in the division of historical research at the Carnegie Institution in 1950.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Thompson has shared his expertise in the field in a variety of positions outside of academia.

Dr. Thompson is the author of "Modern Yucatecan Maya Pottery Making," published in 1958, and served as the editor of "Migrations in New World Culture History" in 1958, "When is a Kiva" in 1990, and "A Jesuit Missionary in Eighteenth Century Sonora" in 2014.

In 2006, the Raymond H. Thompson Award was established in his name by the Department of Anthropology at the University of Arizona; the award is given in recognition of distinguished service to anthropology. He was recognized with the Public Service Award by the Department of Interior in 1990, and the Distinguished Service Award from the American Anthropological Association in 1980 and the Society of American Archaeology.
