Prior to accepting his appointment at CUNY, he held the prestigious Boeing Egtvedt Professorship in electrical engineering at the University of Washington.

Earning a BA, BS, MS, and PhD at the University of Kansas from 1960 to 1969. In 1971 Dr. Haralick established a consulting company Mnemonics, Inc., which he maintained until 2001, while he was a professor. As well, for two years he served as the vice president of research at Machine Vision International in Ann Arbor, MI, during the mid-1980s.

Dr. Haralick's research interests have included high-dimensional space clustering and pattern recognition, which have been documented in more than 600 books, chapters to books, journal articles, and conference papers, including the seminal two-volume "Computer and Robot Vision." He has also served on various editorial boards such as the "IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence", "Machine Vision and Applications" and the "Image and Vision Computing" and others. Dr. Haralick is also known for having contributed to image texture analysis, facet modeling for image analysis, shape analysis using mathematical morphology, computer image processing, computer vision, computer document analysis, and artificial intelligence. Some of his most recent work has been in high-dimensional space clustering, pattern recognition techniques applied to combinatorial problems in free group theory, and the relation decomposition problem in data mining.

Dr. Haralick worked tirelessly by serving as chairman, co-chairman, vice chairman, and program chairperson for conferences and workshops both nationally and abroad since 1978. In 2001, he served as Chairman of the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition and co-chair for the Pattern Recognition and Basic Technology track at the 2006 International Conference on Pattern Recognition. He has also been active in a number of professional organizations. He is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition.

Dr. Haralick was recently honored with the King-Sun Fu Prize at the International Conference on Pattern Recognition in Cancun, Mexico, December 2016. The award is given to one person every two years by the International Association for Pattern Recognition. Professor Haralick is the 15th recipient. The citation of the award is:
"For contributions in image analysis including remote sensing, texture analysis, mathematical morphology, consistent labeling, and system performance evaluation."

He has had other recognition of his scholarly books and articles and appreciation for service during his tenure in Electrical Engineering and most recently in Computer Science. Dr. Haralick has been included in every Who's Who in America since 1988. As well he has been included in Who's Who in Science and Engineering and several other Who's Who publications for his work. By the beginning of 2018, his scholarly works have been referenced over 58,000 times in the scientific archival literature. His 2018 Google Scholar H-index is 74. Also in 2018, he was included in the Who's Who in the World. His website is www.haralick.org.
