With more than 50 years of industry experience, Dr. Gerald has been recognized as a professor emeritus of radiology by the University of Tennessee since 2009, having served as a faculty member in the Department of Radiology in the Health Science Center since 1969 and interim chair since 2004. He was a professor and department chair at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center from 1979 to 1995, director of the Department of Radiology at the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland from 1965 to 1966, and a faculty member in the Department of Radiology at UA Little Rock from 1964 to 1965 and from 1967 to 1969. Dr. Gerald began his career at Memorial Hermann as an intern from 1958 to 1959 and as a resident in radiology from 1959 to 1962.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Gerald pursued an education at the University of Mississippi, completing pregraduate coursework from 1951 to 1954. He concluded his studies in 1958 at the school's Medical Center, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Gerald was recognized as a diplomate of the American Board of Radiology and was certified by the American Board of Neuroradiology.
Beyond his efforts within the field, Dr. Gerald has contributed to numerous endeavors in his professional circles. From 1960 to 1962, he was a trainee at the National Cancer Institute, and he held the position of director of the Department of Radiology at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital from 1983 to 1988 and from 1991 to 2002. Dr. Gerald found success as an author as well, having contributed multiple articles to medical journals and chapters to books.
In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Gerald remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has maintained membership with the American Society of Neuroradiology, the Society for Pediatric Radiology, and the American Roentgen Ray Society. Likewise, Dr. Gerald was involved with the Radiological Society of North America as a councilor from 1980 to 1985, the Southeastern Neuroradiological Society as founder and president from 1977 to 1978, and the Southern Radiological Conference as president from 1975 to 1976.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Gerald has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his career. A Fellow of the American College of Radiology, he completed a Fellowship in Neuroradiology at Tufts-New England Medical Center from 1971 to 1972 and completed a Fellowship in Pediatric Radiology at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center from 1962 to 1964. Dr. Gerald has also been selected for inclusion in many editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
