Gardner Cowles Professor of Anthropology & Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, Dr. Comitas has been teaching at the graduate level for 60 years. First hired in 1958, just 10 years after he completed his undergraduate studies at Columbia College, he went on to become a full professor at Teachers College in 1967, directed its Division of Philosophy, Social Sciences and Education and the Institute of International Studies as well as the Institute of Latin American and Iberian Studies at Columbia proper and the independent Caribbean-focused Research Institute for the Study of Man. Dr. Comitas founded, directed and continues to teach in the Joint Program in Applied Anthropology and in this regard has sponsored more than 100 Ph.D.'s in anthropology a unique academic feat dubbed by colleagues as "The Comitas Phenomenon".
Known as a "Caribbeanist" who carried out field research in both the Hispanic and non-Hispanic Caribbean, Dr. Comitas has also worked in Bolivia, Greece and the former Soviet Republic of Georgia as well as for organizing social science study in Andorra and the Spanish Canary Islands. He has contributed to the understanding of maritime communities in the West Indies, community structure and rural education in Bolivia, education and change in the Creole Caribbean and is responsible for developing the now widely-used concept of occupational multiplicity. Furthermore, he maintains an interest in sociocultural change, migration, education in the developing world, drugs and society, the Caribbean and Latin America.
Between 1977 and 1981, Dr. Comitas served as a member of the Drug Abuse, Clinical, Behavioral and Psychological Research Review committee for the National Institute of Drug Abuse. He is the founder and director of the Comitas Institute for Anthropological Study, an elected member of the National Academy of Education, the former president of the Society of Applied Anthropology, a distinguished member and fellow of the American Anthropological Association, fellow of the New York Academy of Science, and member of several other professional societies. Dr. Comitas is the author, co-author or editor of numerous articles and books in the field of anthropology among which is the highly considered "Ganja in Jamaica: A Medical Anthropological Study of Chronic Marijuana Use" co-authored with Vera Rubin.
The recipient of numerous grants during his career from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, Spencer Foundation, the National Institute of Drug Abuse, NATO, Fulbright and the U.S. Office of Education, Dr. Comitas has been cited in dozens of editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World. Serving his country in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1947 after being drafted at the age of 18 just before completing his undergraduate studies. He holds both the AB and the PhD in anthropology from Columbia University.
