With more than 40 years of university experience to his credit, Dr. Aronoff has been recognized as a distinguished professor at Stony Brook University since 2010. Prior to this appointment, he served Stony Brook University as a professor from 1985 to 2010, associate professor from 1980 to 1985, and assistant professor of linguistics from 1974 to 1980. Dr. Aronoff has held several additional positions at Stony Brook University during this time, including vice provost from 2007 to 2011, deputy provost from 2001 to 2007, and associate provost from 1998 to 2001.

Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Aronoff pursued an education at McGill University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in linguistics in 1969. He concluded his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in linguistics in 1974.

Beyond his efforts within the university, Dr. Aronoff has contributed to numerous endeavors within his professional circles. The editor for Language from 1995 to 2001, he found success as the author of "Word Formation" in 1976 and "Morphology by Itself" in 1993. The president of the Linguistic Society of America in 2005, Dr. Aronoff has maintained membership with American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Sigma Xi and the American Associations for the Advancement of Science, where he served as chair of Section Z in 2004.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Aronoff has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, he was recognized as a fellow of the National Endowment of the Humanities in 1980 and 1993, as well as the American Institute of Indian Studies in 1987. Most recently, he was a Bellagio Center fellow with the Rockefeller Foundation in 2013 and a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation fellow in 2014. Dr. Aronoff is an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Linguistic Society of America. He was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
