With nearly 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Robinson has been recognized as a professor emeritus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison since 2008. Since retiring, he has held the position of interim chair with the school's Department of Materials Science and Engineering from 2015 to 2016, and interim chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 2013. From 1979 to 2007, he was a professor of industrial and systems engineering and computer sciences, having served as an associate professor from 1975 to 1979, and an assistant professor from 1972 to 1975. In addition, he served as chair of the Department of Industrial Engineering from 1981 to 1984, assistant director of the Mathematics Research Center from 1971 to 1974, and as an administrator from 1969 to 1972.

Dr. Robinson was inspired to enter the field from an early age by a love of mathematics and motivated to work with the types of math that can be applied to help people do better in various areas. He began his career as a student at the University of Wisconsin, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1962. He went on to complete a Master of Science at New York University in 1963, before joining the University of Wisconsin-Madison for a Doctor of Philosophy in 1971. Dr. Robinson also holds a diploma from the U.S. Army War College and an honorary doctorate from the University of Zurich.

A respected voice in his field, Dr. Robinson has received numerous awards and honors for his achievements throughout his career. INFORMS gave him the George E. Kimball Medal and has named him a fellow. He is an honoree of the National Research Council, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, for which he is also a fellow. The University of Wisconsin-Madison named him an Outstanding Instructor three times, and awarded him the Byron Bird Award for Excellence in a Research Publication, and the Mathematical Programming Society and Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics gave him the George B. Dantzig Prize. The Military Operations Research Society honored him with the John K. Walker Jr. Award, and his military service earned him a Legion of Merit, a Bronze Star Medal, an Air Medal, three Army Commendation Medals, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Parachutist Badge and the Special Forces Tab. The Republic of Vietnam also awarded Dr. Robinson with the Armed Forces Honor Medal, First Class, and the Staff Service Honor Medal, First Class.
