For more than 50 years, Dr. Finnberg has been involved in the study, practice, research, and teaching of psychology and behavioral medicine. She has been recognized as one of the early contributors to establishing psychologists' role as full medical staff members working within scope of practice.

In 1984, she joined Natividad Medical Center (NMC) in Salinas, CA, a county hospital with the county's only locked inpatient mental health unit, and a teaching hospital for the University of California San Francisco, Community and Family Practice Medicine Program (UCSF). She was the first psychologist at NMC to be admitted to the Active Medical Staff, going on to prestigious positions with the Executive and Quality Assurance Committees. Prior to that, psychologists were limited to Allied Staff membership, commonly reserved for non-doctoral level practitioners. She was an Active Medical Staff member from 1984-2008. She served as Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine f rom 1991-1993, and Secretary-Treasurer of the Medical Staff from 1992-1994. She was Chief Psychologist from 1984-1996, as well as Assistant Chief of Psychiatry from 1985-1995 and Acting Chief of Psychiatry from 1988-1989.

She taught behavioral medicine and supervised Family Practice physicians in the practice of Psychology for UCSF, advancing to Assistant Clinical Professor from 1985-1993 and Associate Clinical Professor from 1993-2014.

In 1988, Governors George Deukmejian and Pete Wilson appointed Dr. Finnberg to the Advisory Board of Agnews Developmental Center in San Jose, CA. She served as Chair from 1989-1991 and 1994-1995, and Vice Chair from 1993-1994, before retiring from the Board in 1996.
Dr. Finnberg also served on the Consulting Medical Staff of Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital Department of Medicine, in Salinas, CA, from 1991-2003, the Consulting and Courtesy staffs of Mee Memorial Hospital in King City, CA, from 1996-1997, and the Active Medical Staff of the Monterey Psychiatric Health Facility in Monterey, CA, Chief of the Medical Staff and Director of Training for the Post-Doctoral Psychology Residency Program from 1996-1997.

While working at Natividad Medical Center, Dr. Finnberg was introduced to Forensic Psychology, evaluating individuals referred by the Courts and private attorneys and testifying at both civil and criminal proceedings.

In 1984, she joined California Forensic Medical Group, Inc., as Contracting Psychologist, providing psychological services to juveniles and adults incarcerated throughout California.

She served as Consulting Psychologist for Child Protective Services, Adult Protective Services, and the Public Guardian in Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz Counties.

From 1996-2012, she worked as a Consulting Psychologist for the California Department of Health Care Services, Mental Health Services Division, Sexually Violent Predator Program and the California Board of Prison Terms Mentally Disabled Offender Program, traveling throughout California to evaluate inmates and provide expert testimony in Court.

Prior to completing her doctoral degree in 1981: Dr. Finnberg worked as a ward clerk and nurse's aide at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY (1966-1968); research assistant in Medical Sociology at Cornell University Medical College, New York Presbyterian Hospital (1969-1970); medical abstractor for USV Pharmaceutical Corporation, New York, NY (1970-1971); medical abstractor and indexer for the Council for Tobacco Research, USA, Inc., New York, NY (1971-1977); research assistant Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, New York, NY, Cancer Center's Patient Care Section Family Studies Program (1973-1974); and adjunct instructor for the School of Education at Brooklyn College, City University of New York (1974-1975).

In addition, she was a research associate for the Tobacco and Health Survey, American Health Foundation, Department of Epidemiology and International Health, School of Medicine, University of California at San Francisco (1979-1981).

From 1971-1976 she worked with the Foundation of Thanatology, dedicated to the study of death and dying, at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. She was a member of the Foundation's Editorial Staff, writing and editing the Journal of Thanatology, Archives of Thanatology, Thanatology Abstracts and Thanatology News.

In addition, from 1977-1981, she was Director of the Grief Psychology and Bereavement Counseling Program for the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science.

Because of her participation in research studies and experience with medical writing and editing, she was chosen by members of her profession to join the editorial staff for Cathexis, a scholarly publication of the California School of Professional Psychology at San Francisco (CSPP-SF, Alliant International University) from1976-1981, and was the editor of The California Psychologist, a publication of the California Psychological Association, from1988-1995.

She completed psychology internships with the Institute for Emotional Education, Inc., New York, NY (1975-1976); Department of Outpatient Medicine at San Francisco General Hospital (1976-1977), Psychology Internship Program co-coordinator (1977-1978); Registered Psychological Assistant, Spectrum Psychology Associates, Berkeley, CA (1977-1979); teaching assistant in Psychodiagnostic and Neuropsychodiagnostic Assessment, CSPP-SF (1977-1978); and psychology intern Team II, Mission Mental Health, Monterey Counseling Center in San Francisco, CA (1977-1978).

Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Finnberg pursued an education at Long Island University (LIU) in Brooklyn, NY, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology in 1969. She followed this accomplishment with a Masters of Arts in psychology at the New School for Social Research in New York, NY in 1973. She concluded her studies at the CSPP-SF, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in professional psychology in 1981.

A licensed psychologist in the State of California, Dr. Finnberg is a member of the National Register of Health Service Psychologists. She is a Fellow and Diplomate in Psychopharmacology from Prescribing Psychologists Register, a Fellow and Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Psychotherapists and Psychodiagnosticians, a Fellow and Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Examiners, Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Medicine and Psychological Specialties. She is Board Certified as a Forensic Examiner in Forensic Medicine. She is a Senior Disablity Analyst, Diplomate of the American Board of Disabilities Analysts, and a Member of the Professional Advisory Council of the American Board of Disability Analysts. She also has served as an expert consultant for the California Board of Psychology.

Past and present professional affiliations include: Mid-Coast Psychological Association (President 1987, Treasurer 1986, Secretary 1985); California Psychological Association; American Psychological Association; Western Psychological Association; Association for Advancement of Behavior Therapy; Society of Behavioral Medicine; Forensic Mental Health Association of California; American Medical Writers Association; Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers; Society for Personality Assessment; International Rorschach Society; International Society of Police Surgeons; New York Academy of Sciences; California Coalition on Sexual Offending; and the International Association for Correctional and Forensic Psychology.

In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Finnberg has accrued accolades and honors throughout her impressive career. Since 1987, she has been inducted in the International Who's Who in Medicine, Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in Finance and Industry.

She was honored in 1971 as one of the Most Outstanding Young Women in America by the LIU Brooklyn Alumni Association. In addition to the LIU Departmental Award in Psychology, she received the CPA Distinguished Service Award in 1989, and the Mid-Coast Psychological Association Distinguished Service Award for Psychology in 1993.
