Diane Jacobs, Ph.D., Recognized for More Than 50 Years of Professional Excellence

Dr. Jacobs was a founding member of the University of Central Florida School of Medicine



Dr. Jacobs has contributed articles to numerous academic journals, including Immunology, the Journal of Experimental Medicine, and Recent Developments in Mucosal Immunity.

    WINTER PARK, FL, May 22, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Diane Jacobs, Ph.D., has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

With more than 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Jacobs has been recognized as professor emerita of the University of Central Florida since 2016, having been a professor of microbiology and molecular biology with the school since 1994. In addition to her academic positions, she also served as chair of the department of health professions from 2002 to 2008 and vice president for research and graduate studies from 1994 to 1998. Prior to obtaining these positions, Dr. Jacobs worked with East Carolina University from 1989 to 1994 as associate vice chancellor of research, dean of the graduate school, and a professor of biology. From 1980 to 1989, she was a professor of microbiology with the State University of New York, Buffalo, having been an associate professor with the school since 1976. Earlier in her career, she was a research associate with the Salk Institute of Biological Studies from 1974 to 1976, and an instructor and lecturer with Hebrew University's Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem from 1967 to 1971.

Initially encouraged to become a mathematician by her high school teacher, Dr. Jacobs began her career as a student at Radcliffe College. During her studies, she found that her talents were more suited to the biological sciences and found another mentor in the new president of the school, who was a microbiologist. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Radcliffe in 1961 and earned a Doctor of Philosophy from Harvard University in 1967.

A respected leader in her field, Dr. Jacobs has been affiliated with numerous professional organizations throughout her career. A fellow of the Association of Schools Allied Health Professionals, she is also a member of the American Association of Immunologists, the American Society of Microbiology, the New York Academy of the Sciences, and the Association of Women Scientists. She was a councilor with the Oak Ridge Association of Universities, a member of the board of directors and former chair of the Council of Graduate Schools, and a former president and member of the executive committee of the Conference of Southern Georgia Graduate Schools.

Dr. Jacobs has contributed articles to numerous academic journals, including Immunology, the Journal of Experimental Medicine, and Recent Developments in Mucosal Immunity. She has served as a reviewer for the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, and she was on the board of directors for Central Florida Innovation Corp. A founding faculty member of the College of Medicine at the University of Central Florida, Dr. Jacobs was also the first woman tenured at the SUNY Buffalo Department of Microbiology. Having experienced challenges as a young woman in the previously male-dominated field, she is gratified to see that more women are involved than before. In her free time, Dr. Jacobs enjoys traveling and doing genealogical research.
