Dr. Akiho Yokota Celebrates 40 Years of Professional Excellence

He received a prize for Science and Technology from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan and the Senior Scientists Award from the Japanese Society of Bioscience, Biotechnology and Agrochemistry

Dr. Yokota has contributed numerous written works in his areas of expertise, including the book "The Biology of Euglena" published by Academic Press, New York.

IKOMA, JAPAN, May 24, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Akiho Yokota has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individual profiles are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Yokota began his career as a student at Shimane University, obtaining a Bachelor of Agriculture in 1972. He continued his studies with the school, completing a Master of Agriculture in 1974. He then attended the University of Osaka Prefecture, where he earned a Doctor of Agriculture in 1978.

From 1978 to 1993, he served as a research associate at the University of Osaka Prefecture where he focused on the biology of Euglena. In 1993, he was named an assistant to the associate professor, and then moved the Research Institute for Innovative Technology for the Earth. The title of a national project he engaged in there was "Reforestation of Desert." The main scientific target was the photosynthetic CO2-fixation enzyme (RuBisCO). It was found that RuBisCO of a primitive red alga Galdieria partita has the best competence in CO2 fixation in nature. This finding was featured as a News Focus in Science Magazine in 1999.

He was transferred to the Graduate School of Biological Sciences, Nara Institute of Biological Sciences (NAIST) as a professor, in 1996 and started a new area of RuBisCO researches. It was generally accepted that a plant-type photosynthetic system appeared on the earth in cyanobacteria 3.5 giga years ago, but his group found that bacteria and archaea, which appeared on the planet before them, possessed the ancestral gene of RuBisCO and the prototype of the photosynthetic CO2 fixation and metabolism system (Science 2003; Nat. Commun. 2017). This research has had a tremendous impact on the world by providing a new way to clarify through research the evolution of organisms at the genetic level.

At NAIST, he founded a university spinoff venture with other professors who were engaged in plant science research, and Dr. Yokota has been entrusted with many national and regional governmental projects for the last 20 years. He devised a method to extract plant RuBisCO containing a large amount of human essential amino acids in a well-balanced manner and aims to develop high nutritive value food containing RuBisCO. In addition, He is now the leader of the game-changing project to synthesize high-energy lipids in Euglena for producing biofuel.

Dr. Yokota has contributed numerous written works in his areas of expertise, including the book "The Biology of Euglena" published by Academic Press, New York.
