With more than 45 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Sedlacek has been recognized as an emeritus professor of education at the University of Maryland since 2007, having most recently served the esteemed academic institution as a professor of education from 1990 to 2007. Prior to this appointment, he worked for the University of Maryland as an associate professor from 1971 to 1990, assistant professor from 1967 to 1971, and a research advisor with the Cultural Study Center from 1969 to 1976. Previously, he was the acting assistant director for basic research with the division of education at the Association of American Medical Colleges from 1966 to 1967, research psychologist for the Association of American Medical Colleges from 1964 to 1966, research assistant at the Placement Center for Kansas State University from 1963 to 1964, and director of summer employment at the Placement Center for Kansas State University from 1961 to 1962. Dr. Sedlacek began his career as a graduate assistant at Iowa State University from 1960 to 1961.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Sedlacek pursued an education at Iowa State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in industrial administration in 1960. He followed this accomplishment with a Master of Science in industrial psychology in 1961, also from Iowa State University. Dr. Sedlacek concluded his studies at Kansas State University in 1966, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in industrial psychology.
Beyond his primary trade, Dr. Sedlacek has contributed to numerous efforts outside of his professional circles. He held the title of associate professor at Roosevelt University from 1966 to 1967, visiting lecturer at the National College of Education from 1966 to 1967, assistant director of the counseling center and director of testing, research, and data processing for the University of Maryland from 1967 to 2007, and adjunct professor for the School of Pharmacy at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, from 1992 to 2007. He has also participated in many committees and councils for research in the field, including the research advisory committee with the department of student services at Old Dominion University from 1986 to 1988, the technical review panel on the National Survey of Student Support Service Projects for the U.S. Department of Education from 1991 to 1994, and the executive council for the Association for Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development from 1984 to 1987. Furthermore, Dr. Sedlacek served as a consultant for a number of major organizations and universities, such as New York University, Case Western Reserve University, Kent State University, Texas A&M University and Tufts University, among several others.
The editor for Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development from 1984 to 1987, Dr. Sedlacek found much success with his written works, having served on the editorial boards for College Student Journal from 1972 to 1975, the Journal of College Student Development from 2000 to 2006, Journal of the First Year Experience and Students in Transition since 1987, Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development since 2000, Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance from 1983 to 1984, and the World Journal of Learning Disabilities since 2017. The co-author of "Racism in American Education: A Model for Change" in 1976, he had authored "Racism in Society: A Behavioral Model for Change" in 1974, "Beyond the Big Test: Noncognitive Assessment in Higher Education" and "Measuring Noncognitive Variables: Improving Admissions, Success, and Retention for Underrepresented Students" in 2017. Likewise, Dr. Sedlacek contributed hundreds of articles to such professional journals as the Journal of Medical Education, the Journal of Counseling and Development, the Journal of the Freshman Year Experience and the Journal of Career Development.
Additionally, Dr. Sedlacek remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has maintained involvement with the American College Personnel Association, the American Counseling Association, the American Educational Research Association and the American Psychological Association. He was also a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and the National Council on Measurement in Education. Dr. Sedlacek was further associated with Omicron Delta Kappa and Psi Chi.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Sedlacek has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. A research fellow with the Greater Kansas City Mental Health Foundation from 1962 to 1963, he was recognized as a visiting scholar with Millersville University in 1992, a senior scholar with the American College Personnel Association from 1998 to 2003, the Campus Model of Excellence from the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Education with the University of Maryland in 2005, and a fellow of the American Counseling Association in 2010. He has also been presented with the National Association of Medical Minority Educators Award in 1983, the Ralph F. Berdie Memorial Research Award from the American Counseling Association in 1992, the John B. Muir Writing Award from the National Association for College Admission Counseling in 1993, a Research Award from the American Counseling Association in 1997 and the Contribution to Knowledge Award from the American College Personnel Association in 2004. Earning the William R. "Bud" Thomas Mentoring Award from the University of Maryland in 2011, he was also honored as a Diamond Award Honoree with the American College Personnel Association in 2002 and his work was noted as one of the 21 Outstanding Articles in the History of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators Journal. Dr. Sedlacek was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America.
