As a librarian and educator with more than 40 years of experience, Dr. Stephens has enjoyed a successful career during which she has been able to positively impact individuals and her community. Dr. Stephens began her career as a librarian with the Muscle Shoals Regional Library before holding a similar position with the Memphis Public Library and serving as director of the Jennie Stephens Smith Public Library. From there, she joined the faculty of The University of Alabama as a part-time instructor in the College of Communication and Information Sciences. She then progressed gradually, acting as an assistant and associate professor before retiring and beginning work as an adjunct professor in 2007. A lifetime member of the American Library Association, Dr. Stephens is also affiliated with Reference and User Services Association, the Public Library Association, the Association for Library and Information Science Education and the Alabama Library Association.
While her career provides her with much fulfillment and has allowed her to contribute to the dissemination of information on a grand scale, Dr. Stephens is also a dedicated volunteer with Turning Point Domestic Violence Services, Hospice of West Alabama, the University Presbyterian Church Food Pantry, and West Alabama AIDS Outreach, for which she has served on the board of directors since 2002. She received a Beta Phi Mu Award for Distinguished Service in Library Education, the Humanitarian, Eminent Librarian, and Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Alabama Library Association, and the Knox Hagood Award from the University of Alabama College of Communications and Information Sciences, among several others.
Dr. Stephens holds a Bachelor of Arts from the Mississippi University for Women, a Master of Library Science from the Vanderbilt University Peabody College, and a Doctor of Library Science from Columbia University. Married to Pat L. Dunbar, she enjoys traveling, reading, watching movies and attending plays in her spare time. Notably, she has been listed in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
