Joseph S. DeSalvo, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. DeSalvo has been a professor in the Department of Economics at the University of South Florida for the past 35 years. He served as Department Chairman between 1998 and 2003 and as director of the Center of Economic and Management Research between 1984 and 1989. After receiving his BA and MA in economics from the University of Florida, Dr. DeSalvo entered academia in 1961 as an instructor of economics at the Virginia Military Institute, where he taught principals of economics for two years. Upon completion of course work for the PhD in economics at Northwestern University in 1967, earning the PhD in 1968 upon completion of his dissertation, he joined The Rand Corporation in Santa Monica, CA, a non-profit global policy think tank that provides both defense and non-defense research. In 1971, he accepted the position of associate professor at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, where he also served as department chair from 1972 to 1974. He spent 12 years at UWM, with one year on leave as Visiting Research Professor at the Faculté Universitaire Catholique de Mons (Belgium).

Dr. DeSalvo has devoted much time to departmental, college, university, and community service, having served on more than 60 committees during his academic career. He teaches several undergraduate and graduate courses and has received two teaching awards from the University of South Florida.

Dr. DeSalvo has written extensively, authoring five books, more than 35 academic articles and over 50 non­academic articles. He was listed as one of the "all-time intellectual leaders of regional science," based on journal-article citations, in Papers in Regional Science, which commemorated the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Regional Science Association (now the Regional Science Association International.

The recipient of 23 grants and contracts, Dr. DeSalvo has been interviewed on television 15 times and more than 30 times for various newspapers and magazines. He has also hosted numerous talks on topics such as economic and demographic trends in the Tampa Bay area, economic forecasting, and economic impact analysis. He has participated in close to 50 different conferences locally and abroad.

Married to his wife Sandra Ann Birdseye since 1960 with two children, Dr. DeSalvo was the recipient of a Professorial Excellence Award by the University of South Florida for 1996–1997. He has also been cited in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
