With more than 35 years of professional experience, Dr. Mruthinti has been a tenured professor in the department of biology at the University of West Georgia since 2006, having served as an associate professor since 2001. In addition to his primary role, he also served as the founding associate dean of the College of Science and Mathematics from 2011 to 2015. Prior to obtaining these positions, he served as an assistant and associate professor with the Medical College of Georgia, from 1992 to 2001. Earlier in his career, he was a lecturer with the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda from 1982 to 1988. Dr. Mruthinti is also serving as an adjunct professor at the Acharya Nagarjuna University since 2012. Based on his scholarly achievements, he received the Fulbright-Nehru Scholarship in 2011. He is a Fellow of the Association of Biotechnology and Pharmacy since 2009, and received the INDICASAT-ABAP Distinguished Scientist award in 2016.

Dr. Mruthinti was inspired to pursue a career in science by his parents and supported by his life partner, Dr. Shyamala Mruthinti, who is an eminent neuroscientist in her own right, currently pursuing research interests in mind and body relationship with respect to physical and spiritual wellbeing. He began his career as a student at VSR College, Tenali, India, and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology, Botany and Chemistry in 1974. He then joined the Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, India, obtaining a Master of Science in Zoology in 1977 and earning a Doctor of Philosophy in Zoology in 1982. Dr. Mruthinti was a University Grants Commission Research Fellow while pursuing his doctorate from 1977-1982. In 1985, he was awarded a travel fellowship by the International Society of Developmental Biologists to present his research work at the international conference held at Los Angeles, CA. He received a post-doctoral fellowship from National Institutes of Health while working at Medical College of Georgia from 1988 to 1992. He is the recipient of multiple research grants from National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation and Pharmaceutical companies since 1992.

A respected voice in the field, Dr. Mruthinti has published numerous articles and contributed to books in his field. He is on the editorial board of 5 international journals. He has been invited to speak and organize several national and international conferences and symposia in his area of expertise. He was the member of the Association of Biotechnology and Pharmacy, the Association of Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the International Society of Eye Research, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Currently he is working on the diabetic- and aging-complications of the eye, and structure-function relationship of aquaporins, the water channels. He is also working on STEM education. As the coordinator of NSF funded Louis Stokes Alliance of Minority Participation (LSAMP) grant at the University of West Georgia, he is promoting and mentoring minority students in STEM fields.
