Jeanne Salyer, Ph.D., RN, FNAP, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Salyer is an associate professor in the School of Nursing at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her history at the university dates back to 1979 when she first worked as a pulmonary clinical nurse specialist within the respiratory intensive care unit, division of critical care nursing, in the School of Medicine. She has since served in various other capacities, including as unit coordinator in the same unit, staff nurse, case manager, project co-director of the outcomes research in nursing administration, and, more recently, as an interim chair of the adult health and nursing systems between 2013 and 2016. Currently teaching in the RN to BS program and the doctoral program, Dr. Salyer teaches Standards of Professional Practice and Performance, implements curriculum and actively works with doctoral students to help them develop as scholars.

First earning a Diploma in Nursing at the University of Alabama Hospitals and Clinics in 1967, Dr. Salyer went on to accept her first position as a staff nurse in the emergency department at UAB Hospitals as part of the UAB Health System in Birmingham, AL. She later worked in different areas of the hospital before briefly serving as an instructor of the critical care staff development program at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami between 1978 and 1979. Dr. Salyer has also since earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing at the University of Alabama School of Nursing and a Doctor of Philosophy in nursing at Virginia Commonwealth University.

A longtime member of the American Heart Association, where she has been a member of the Council on Cardiovascular and Stroke Nursing since 2006, the National Academies of Practice on the public policy committee since 2012, and the Southern Nursing Research Society on the grants committee since 2011, among many other professional societies, Dr. Salyer is also a longtime member of Sigma Theta Tau International.

Dr. Salyer has written extensively in her field. In addition to contributing dozens of articles in peer-reviewed journals, such as Heart and Lung and the Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing, she has contributed multiple abstracts and chapters to five books. Selected for various international presentations at conferences for the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation and other organizations, and more than 35 conferences at the state and local levels, Dr. Salyer has contributed more than two dozen poster presentations as well. She has been serving on the editorial board for Progress in Transplantation since 2002 and is a longtime manuscript reviewer for several other professional journals since 1999. The recipient of several grants between 1989 and 2015 and multiple awards during her tenure, Dr. Salyer was recently nominated for a Distinguished Teaching Award from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2015 and received a Virginia March of Dimes Nurse of the Year Award in 2014. Additionally, she received an Outstanding Faculty Award from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing in 2014.
