Steven Mitchell Stanley, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

A research professor in the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Dr. Stanley is a paleontologist who has been with this university for the past 13 years. He conducts research on the history of life and environments on Earth, using data from the fossil record as well as from the modern world. He formerly taught at Johns Hopkins University for 36 years and for the last 12 of those years, chaired the university's part-time evening Environmental Science and Policy Master's degree program, which he founded. He previously taught at the University of Rochester from 1967 to 1969. He has also been a research associate of the Smithsonian Institution since 1972.

After graduating summa cum laude from Princeton University in 1963, Dr. Stanley earned his doctorate from Yale University in 1968. Early in his career he was awarded the Allan C. Davis Medal of the Maryland Academy of Sciences as Maryland's outstanding young scientist of 1973. He has served on numerous scientific committees and on two boards of the National Research Council as well as on its Commission on Geosciences, Environment, and Resources. He belongs to several scientific societies and has served as president of the Paleontological Society, from which he received the Paleontological Society Medal, and as president of the American Geological Institute (now the American Geosciences Institute). He has received the Twenhofel Medal, the highest award of the Society for Sedimentary Geology, and the Penrose Medal, the highest award of the Geological Society of America, which is "for eminent research in pure geology." Dr. Stanley has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences and has been awarded its Mary Clark Thompson Medal, "for contributions to paleontology and geology." For books he has In addition to his many scientific articles, Dr. Stanley has written several books, among them the The New Evolutionary Timetable, nominated for an American Book Award, and Earth System History, which is now in its seventh edition, integrating the physical and biological history of our planet and standing as the leading textbook in its field. With David M. Raup, he coauthored Principles of Paleontology, a pioneering book dealing with concepts rather than morphology and taxonomy. His book Macroevolution: Pattern and Process, published in 1979, has received nearly 2,000 literature citations, and is still cited more than 40 times a year. His dissertation monograph, Relation of Shell Form to Life Habits in the Bivalvia has received nearly 1,000 literature citations and after nearly 50 years receives more than 30 citations a year.

Dr. Stanley has been cited in Who's Who in America since 1987 as well as in multiple editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in the World.
