Entering the industry as a music researcher for Paramount Pictures in 1978, she later worked as a music reviewer for the Los Angeles Times, as a scriptwriter and producer for KUSC-FM in Los Angeles, program annotator and education consultant for Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and liner note writer for Pro Piano Records in New York City. Currently affiliated with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra as an education consultant since 1998, she has also served the Los Angeles City College on the music department's advisory board since 1994.
Composing chamber music and song cycles, Ms. Henkel's business is very labor intensive and is mostly instrumental. A boutique business that was picked up in 2003 by the biggest double-reed distributor in the world after attending a conference, she enjoys the everyday challenge of creating perfection, allowing little room for mistakes.
Born in Los Angeles, Ms. Henkel first obtained a Bachelor of Arts in history at the University of California, Los Angeles, followed by a Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts in music at California State University, Northridge. Graduating summa cum laude, she is a longstanding member of Phi Beta Kappa. She is also a member of The Recording Academy, the Musicians Union of Los Angeles Local 47, Delta Omicron and the Phi Beta Fraternity: National Professional Association for the Creative and Performing Arts.
Recognized with a Commission for Music Award by the State of Alaska in 1994, Ms. Henkel has been showcased in more than a dozen editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women. When she isn't busy composing, she enjoys hiking the Cornwall coastal path, traveling and studying astronomy.
