STINSON BEACH, CA, June 19, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Thomas Silk, Esq., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Silk celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

An attorney specializing in nonprofit law, Mr. Silk has been the founding principal of Silk Nonprofit Law since 2008. A practicing attorney for more than 54 years, he formerly served as the founding chair of Silk, Adler & Colvin from 1972 to 2008, and he spent several years as an associate with Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison and as a special assistant to the assistant general attorney and appellate attorney within the tax division of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.
Representing charitable and public benefit organizations, Mr. Silk has served hundreds of clients with Silk Nonprofit Law, including Apple Computer, Ford Foundation, Friends of the Library, Metropolitan Community Church, and the San Francisco Orchestra. He has earned the opportunity to work with some stellar colleagues in a growing field of law that has emerged in response to the increasing complexity of federal tax law and state charitable law, and the explosive growth of the nonprofit sector worldwide.

He has been admitted to the California Bar Association, the Supreme Court of the United States, as well as the Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, Ninth, Tenth and D.C. Circuits of the U.S. Court of Appeals. Heavily involved in philanthropy and nonprofit throughout his career, Mr. Silk served as a legal director for the Comparative Nonprofit Law Project with the Asia Pacific Philanthropy Consortium during the mid-1990s and was a legislative counsel for the Government of Palau in the late 1970s. In 2004, he began serving as an adviser for the Project on the Principles of Law for Nonprofit Organizations of the American Law Institute. Mr. Silk also taught as an adjunct professor in nonprofit law at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1991 to 1995.

A speaker and consultant in his field, Mr. Silk is the author of several books, including the 2007 "Good Governance Practices for 501 (c) (3) Organizations: Should the IRS Become Further Involved" and the 2003 "Corporate Philanthropy and Law: A Guide to Tax Charities and An Introduction to Compliance with Anti-Terrorist Laws." He has contributed several scholarly articles to peer-reviewed journals and served on the board of advisers for "The Exempt Organization Tax Review" from 2004 to 2008.

A longstanding member and formerly on the board of directors for the California Bar Association, Mr. Silk has also been affiliated with several other professional organizations, including as chair of the governance committee for the California Bar Foundation and as a member of the Bar Association of San Francisco, the State Bar of California, and the American Bar Association. Mr. Silk currently serves on the board of directors for The Redwoods, Community Housing for Seniors, in Mill Valley since 2017, has been an elder at the Stinson Beach Presbyterian Church since 2013, and has been chair of the advisory compliance committee and the general counsel for In Defense of Animals since 2013.

In 2012, Mr. Silk was honored with a Vanguard Award for Distinguished Lifetime Achievement in Nonprofit Law by the American Bar Association and has been a featured listee in Super Lawyers and Best Lawyers in America. He also earned an Environmental Elder Award by the Resource Renewal Institute in 2012. Included in more than 35 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in the World, Mr. Silk is happily married to his wife Kathleen Foote and is the father of one and grandfather of two.
