A 1978 graduate of Harvard University, Dr. Paul earned an MD from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1982. He then completed a residency in psychiatry and a fellowship in substance abuse disorders. In 1987, Dr. Paul became a board-certified psychiatrist through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He is board certified in addiction psychiatry as well.
Today, Dr. Paul is a psychiatrist and addiction specialist who works using psychotherapy and psycho-pharmacology in the treatment of addictive disorders, trauma, anxiety, mood disorders, and personality problems. Additionally, Dr. Paul is currently studying Internal Family Systems (IFS) psychotherapy. He treats adults and older adolescents at his offices in Manhattan and Nassau County, NY.
Along with his direct work with patients, Dr. Paul is an esteemed educator who serves as a clinical associate professor in the department of psychiatry at New York University's Langone Medical Center. His professional affiliations include the American Psychiatric Association, the American Society of Addiction Medicine, the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry and the American Medical Association.
Dr. Paul, who is a recipient of three Patient Choice Awards and several Compassionate Doctor Awards, has been distinguished as a Top Doctor in the New York Metro Area by Castle Connolly 25 plus years running. He was named Top Doctor of the East Coast by Castle Connolly in 2020, named to Top 100 of Physicians in 2019 and has also been identified as a Top Doctor in New York Magazine several times. He was listed among the Top 50 Addiction Psychiatrists in U.S. News and World Report. His many achievements were taken into consideration when he was chosen to be featured in the 64th through 70th editions of Who's Who in America.
Outside of his professional work, Dr. Paul is involved with the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine (FOCOS), and also supports various environmental causes as well as the American Cancer Society and Ronald McDonald House, among others.
