Dr. Lewis-White is a tenured professor of reading in the department of teacher education at Eastern Michigan University.

Teaching undergraduate students who will soon graduate and become teachers themselves, as well as graduate students who have returned to campus to receive their reading specialist degree, Dr. Lewis-White is a tenured professor of reading in the department of teacher education at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. A faculty member at the university since 1996, she formerly taught as a bilingual educator in Dallas and Arlington, TX, between 1977 and 1996.

Dr. Lewis-White's major areas of study include primary and secondary language acquisition, the relationship between language and literacy development, early literacy and academic language and literacy. She also has expertise in phonemic awareness, phonics instruction, vocabulary development and writing across the curriculum at the elementary level. Throughout her career, Dr. Lewis-White has presented at state, national and international conferences and has served as a lead investigator for a research project alongside six of her colleagues where they investigated best practices for using e-readers with children's literature. Furthermore, she has served as an adjunct professor of reading at Texas Women's University and as an adjunct professor of English as a second language at East Texas State University. She has continued to serve as a freelance consultant since 1987.

A longstanding member of the Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers, the National Writing Project, the International Literacy Association, and Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, where she served on the nominating committee, Dr. Lewis-White is also a member and former chair of the elementary education committee of Texas Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages: Region 5. She has served as a consultant on the book "Ciencias-Silver Burdett," published in 1998, has contributed poetry to various publications and has contributed chapters to a book in her area of expertise by another author.

Highly educated, Dr. Lewis-White holds a Bachelor of Arts in home economics and a Master of Arts in social sciences from California State University, followed by postgraduate coursework at Texas Women's University and a Doctor of Philosophy in reading at East Texas State University. She is a certified bilingual and elementary education teacher in the state of Texas.

The recipient of a MARS Social Justice Award in 2013, Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award by the National Academic Advising Association in 2011, and a Ronald W. Collins Provost Distinguished Faculty Award in 2007, Dr. Lewis-White has been cited in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who of American Women. Locally involved as a troop leader for the Girl Scouts of America in Dallas during the 1980s, Dr. Lewis-White has long been married to her husband Francis Everett White since 1975 and has two children and two grandchildren.
