Born to Cesar Augusto Espadas and Aurora Sosa, Dr. Espadas studied at the University of Yucatan to become a doctor in 1971, going on to earn an MD with honors in Psychiatry from the University of Missouri in Kansas City. He was licensed for medical practice in Kansas City the same year, and in 1985, he returned to Mexico to practice with the Rehabilitation and Special Education Center in Merida. Dr. Espadas joined the Center as Director from 1985 to 1989, concurrently teaching as a Professor of Abnormal Psychology at the University of Yucatan until 1991.
In 1994 he was in charge of creating and operating the Psychology Department of the Ministry of Public Safety for the Government of Yucatan, which he still oversees to date.
In 1995, Dr. Espadas rejoined the Rehabilitation and Special Education Center, where he served through 2001. Dr. Espadas also became Director of the School of Psychology at CTM in 1995, where he continues to provide psychiatric instruction. From 2012 to 2013, he served as vice president of the Academy of Medicine and Surgery for the State of Yucatan, and from 2013 to 2014, he served as President of the Academy of Psychiatry of the same State.
As a distinguished Mexican Psychiatrist, Dr. Espadas was recognized with the "2009 Yucatan Medal" Award from the government of Yucatan. He is a lifetime member of the College of Psychiatry in Yucatan, as well as an honorary fellow of the Mexican Psychiatry Association; among others, he is also a member of the following institutions: Latin American Society of Polar Disorders, and the Board of Honor and Justice of the Yucatan Academy of Medicine and Surgery A.C.
Dr. Espadas has supported the Association of Culture and Democracy, where he served as President in 2002, as well as the Association of History and the Philosophy of Medicine and the American Psychiatry Association. He was selected for inclusion in three volumes of Who's Who in the World in 2008, 2009, and 2010.
He is the author of numerous articles published in magazines and professional journals, as well as the book "Emotions, A View to the Self." He also published a book of poetry entitled "Poemonte" in 2010, for which he received the "José Díaz Bolio" poetry award. Additionally, Dr. Espadas wrote the prologues to the books "Thoughts on Medical Ethics," "Education in Rural Mexico," "Liquidámbar" (poetry) and "Poems to my Family." He also edited "Tribute to a Humanitarian Life" in 2012, as well as "Resplandores y Penumbras del Alma" (Glows and Shadows of the Soul) in 2014.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Espadas is married to Miriam Del Carmen Gutierrez, with whom he has had three children: Cesar Ivan, Miriam Aurora, and Sergio Ivan; and has four grandchildren. Additionally, he enjoys music, arts, and baseball.
