With more than 40 years of government, academic, and industry experience to his credit, Dr. Roberts has worked as the Head of the Biochemical Pathology Section in the Laboratory of Pathology at the National Cancer Institute for the National Institutes of Health since 1988. Prior to this appointment, he held the position of Research Chemist at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases for the National Institutes of Health from 1987 to 1988. Previously, he served the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases for the National Institutes of Health as a senior staff fellow in 1987 and staff fellow from 1984 to 1986. Dr. Roberts began his career as a senior research associate in the Clinical Assays Division of Travenol Laboratories, Inc., from 1976 to 1979.

Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Roberts pursued an education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1976. He concluded his studies at the University of Michigan in 1983, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in biological chemistry.

Among his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Roberts has contributed to peer-review panels for the National Institutes of Health and other national and international funding agencies. Dr. Roberts has also held the role of career advisor for the Career Assistance Network at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology since 2001.

Based on his research accomplishments, Dr. Roberts is an inventor of over 25 patents for biomedical technology in the United States. Dr. Roberts found success with his written works as well, having authored more than 240 articles for esteemed journals. Likewise, he was the editor of the book "Cell Surface Glycoconjugates: Structure and Function" in 1993. Furthermore, Dr. Roberts has served on the editorial board of Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences since 2003, PLoS ONE since 2011, Scientific Reports since 2012, the Journal of Cell Communication and Signaling since 2014, Glycobiology from 1995 to 2005, and the Journal of Biological Chemistry from 1995 to 2000, from 2003 to 2008, and from 2011 to 2016.

Dr. Roberts remains affiliated with various professional organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He is a current member of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, International Society for Extracellular Vesicles, and the American Society for Matrix Biology. Previously, Dr. Roberts was a member of the Society for Glycobiology.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Roberts has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. He was presented with the Lee Murphy Memorial Prize from the University of Michigan in 1985, the Walter J. Johnson Annual Prize for Research in Life Sciences in 1987, the Director's Merit Award from the National Cancer Institute in 2016 and nine Federal Technology Transfer Awards from 2007 to 2017. He was recognized among the Faculty of 1000 since 2014, and elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2014. Dr. Roberts was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the East.
