With more than 30 years of industry experience, Dr. Betts is currently retired, having most recently worked as an economist and financial consultant for Raymond James Morgan Keegan from 2000 to 2017. Prior to this appointment, she held the positions of economist, technical analyst, and financial consultant for Morgan Stanley Smith Barney from 1994 to 2000. Dr. Betts began her career as an assistant professor in history and economics at Southern Methodist University from 1985 to 1994.
Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Betts pursued an education at Southern Methodist University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in history in 1976. She continued her academic efforts with a Master of Arts in history in 1980, also at Southern Methodist University. Following these accomplishments, she obtained a Master of Arts in economics from the University of Chicago in 1986. Dr. Betts concluded her studies in 1991 at the University of Texas at Austin, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in economics.
Beyond her responsibilities within the field, Dr. Betts has participated in numerous endeavors in her community. She contributed to Southern Methodist University as a public relations and development liaison in the Department of Economics from 1990 to 1992, a visiting assistant professor from 1990 to 1992, on the Fulbright campus interviewing committee from 1992 to 1993, on the Women Studies Council from 1993 to 1994, as a faculty mentor for the university honors first year mentoring program from 1992 to 2012, and adjunct assistant professor from 1992 to 2012. Likewise, Dr. Betts has held multiple roles at the University of Oxford, including on the summer faculty from 1991 to 1993, adjunct history instructor from 1989 to 1990, adjunct economics instructor from 1985 to 1989, and teaching assistant in the Department of History in 1980.
Furthermore, Dr. Betts was a lecturer in the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas in 1988. She has found much success as with her written works, having authored "Crisis on the Rio Grande: Poverty, Unemployment, and Economic Development on the Texas-Mexico Border" in 1994 and "Historical Perspectives on the American Economy: Selected Reading" in 1995. Dr. Betts has also written many articles for esteemed journals and publications.
In addition to her primary trade, Dr. Betts remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. She has been a member of the American Economic Association, the American Historical Association, the Economic History Association, and the Social Science History Association. She has also been active with the Cliometric Society, Omicron Delta Epsilon, The International Economics Honor Society, and the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society. Associated with the North America Conference on British Studies, Dr. Betts was involved with the National Council for Research on Women as an affiliate.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Betts has accrued several accolades and honors throughout her impressive career. She was presented with the Margareta Deschner Teaching Award from the Southern Methodist University in 1991. She was recognized as a Humanities and Sciences Merit Scholar from the Southern Methodist University in 1978, a Research Planning Grantee of the National Science Foundation in 1992, and an Affiliated Research Scholar of the Clayman Institute for Gender Research at Stanford University from 1993 to 1994. Dr. Betts was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women.
