The Maurice Hexter Professor of Pulmonary Medicine, Dr. Schachter specializes in pulmonary and critical care medicine, as well as occupational and environmental medicine. Trained as both a pulmonologist and in critical care medicine, he is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, and critical care medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

A native New Yorker, Dr. Schachter is a graduate of the Lycee Francais of New York. He holds a BA in mathematics from Columbia University and a Doctor of Medicine from New York University School of Medicine. After an internship and residency in internal medicine at Bellevue Hospital, he served as a Lieutenant Commander in the medical corps of the United States Navy as Director of the Pulmonary Division of Saint Albans Naval Hospital. He continued his studies in pulmonary medicine with a fellowship in the pulmonary department of Yale University School of Medicine where he was awarded the Elliot Trudeau Fellowship of the American Lung Association for research in pulmonary disease. He continued his medical research and practice as a faculty member of the Yale University School of Medicine and as chaired Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Past President of both the American Lung Association of New York City and the National Association of Medical Directors of Respiratory Care, he is currently a Board Member of the American Lung Association of the North East and a former member of the board of the National Lung Association for whom he currently serves on the National Scientific Advisory Committee. In addition, he was elected a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Chest Physicians. The American Lung Association recently honored Dr. Schachter naming him as Wilbur Ross Medalist for his contributions to the Lung Association and to pulmonary medicine.

Dr. Schachter has published more than 400 papers and abstracts, 28 books and chapters that cover asthma, COPD, lung cancer, occupational lung disease, respiratory pharmacology and lung function. His research includes both clinical and bench research, investigating the clinical course, epidemiology and mechanisms of underlying airway diseases that are seen in workers in a wide range of industries. These include textile workers, farming, baking, artists, and musicians.

Dr. Schachter was inspired to work in medicine by his father who was a physician trained in Vienna. In his free time he enjoys collecting old medical and scientific books as well as first editions of modern literature.
