Gene L. Wunderlich, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Wunderlich, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Wunderlich has many years' experience in economics and related fields. He has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes accrued in his field. Dr. Wunderlich's education began in a one-room schoolhouse in North Dakota. He received his Bachelor of Science from the University of North Dakota in 1949, and Master of Science from Iowa State University in 1951. He continued his studies in economics there, then, as a Fulbright scholar, studied at Bombay (now Mumbai) University for his dissertation (land reform in western India), and received his Doctor of Philosophy from Iowa State University in 1955.

During his 40 plus years in the United States Department of Agriculture Dr. Wunderlich held various positions of leadership, individual research, and collaborative inquiry, principally but not exclusively, in natural resource economics. Within his years in USDA's Economic Research Service were periods of independent study, research, and consultancy in the U.S. and abroad. Prior to his retirement he held the position in ERS of senior economist. Following his retirement from USDA in late 1995 he continued his career through inquiry and writing.

Throughout his career in ERS, he undertook special assignments and opportunities. In 1962 for example, at Bombay University with another Fulbright scholarship, he revisited and assessed the land reform he studied nine years earlier. In 1966, he chaired the US delegation to Rome for the UN's first conference on land reform. He contributed to land reform conferences in Argentina, Philippines, Switzerland, and also Zimbabwe from which he edited the book Agricultural Landownership In Transitional Economies (1995). In 1970, he served USAID in Delhi to assess land reform programs in India. He has been advisor for the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry of Bulgaria in 1992, the Republic of Armenia Ministry of Agriculture in 1993, and the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine in 1993 and 1996. Dr. Wunderlich has also contributed as a consultant to the World Bank in Moldova in 1994. In subcontract to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University from 1996 to 1997, he designed curricula in governance and natural resource economics for the Agricultural University in Tirana, Albania.

Dr. Wunderlich has found success with his written works as well. He contributed over 200 peer reviewed articles, bulletins, books and book chapters, in addition to myriad technical and advisory reports. He was editor of USDA's Journal of Agricultural Economics Research from 1987 to 1992 and later wrote a complete history of the journal and its role in the agency. Since his retirement, in addition to smaller pieces, he published the books: American Country Life: A Legacy (2003), Stone Church (2007, 2012) and Seven Creations (2012). Dr. Wunderlich remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise, including the American Agricultural Economics Association, the American Economic Association.

Throughout his impressive career, for many of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Wunderlich has received recognition. He was presented with multiple awards from the United States Department of Agriculture, including the Superior Service Award in 1976 and 1993 and the Economic Research Service Award in 1992 and 1993. Likewise, he was a Fulbright Scholar at Mumbai University from 1953 to 1954 and from 1962 to 1963, as well as Fellow in Law at Yale University from 1966 to 1967. Dr. Wunderlich was selected for inclusion in many editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
