Retired in 2013, Ms. Ostergaard began her legal practice in 1980 as an elbow clerk to Judge Jerome Farris on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in Seattle. She then joined Roberts & Shefelman as an associate in 1982 and was elected as a partner of that firm (the first female partner in that firm's 79 year history) in 1987; during her time at that firm, Ms. Ostergaard represented clients in several significant cases in the Washington Supreme Court, including Chemical Bank v. Washington Public Power Supply System and City of Tacoma v. Taxpayers of the City of Tacoma, and specialized in municipal and public finance law. In 1988, a merger created Foster Pepper & Shefelman, where Ms. Ostergaard continued as a partner until her withdrawal in 1992. For most of the next dozen years, she worked as a sole proprietor, serving as counsel to municipal bond underwriting firms and providing legal advice to municipal corporations. Ms. Ostergaard devoted the last nine years of her career to serving as a deputy prosecuting attorney for the civil division in the Snohomish County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, where she was responsible for advising, drafting contracts for and occasionally litigating on behalf of various county departments.

Ms. Ostergaard earned a Bachelor of Science at the University of Washington in 1972 and Master of Science at Purdue University in 1974. She then interned in clinical psychology at Yale University Medical School between 1976 and 1977 before returning to the University of Washington, where she received a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1980.

Ms. Ostergaard was admitted to practice by the Washington Bar Association, the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the United States Court of Claims. As a law student, she published an article in the Washington Law Review, worked as a research assistant to a law professor, and served as a notes and comments editor for the Washington Law Review; during her years of practice, she made frequent presentations to professional groups (including lawyers, accountants, and finance professionals).

At the University of Washington Law School, Ms. Ostergaard received a Sophia Wilbur Albright Scholarship and a Law School Alumni Scholarship; during graduate school and her internship, she received fellowships from the National Institute of Mental Health. Married to William Howard Patton with two children, she has been cited in approximately 40 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law and Who's Who in the West.
