Armstrong, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Armstrong celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Dr. Armstrong has always been passionate about history and understanding how the past affects the present. Pursuing a career in history education was the most natural way to combine his personal passion with his desire to help others. As a dedicated professional for more than 40 years, he holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from the University of Colorado, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Virginia. He began his career as an assistant professor at Georgia College, where he eventually served as dean for six years. Throughout his career, he has also held positions at various universities such as vice president of academic affairs, provost and senior vice president, professor of history, vice chancellor and president. Long active with accreditation in higher education, he worked with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and finished his career with the Commission for Academic Accreditation in the United Arab Emirates; he continues as a consultant with education in the UAE. He has also served on several advisory boards, boards of directors, boards of curators and associations in the field.

Civically, Dr. Armstrong cites the highlights of his career as serving as the president of the Georgia Association of Historians, President of the Milledgeville/Baldwin County Chamber of Commerce, and the president of the Rotary Club of Alexandria, LA. He has also been an active member of the Old Capital Historical Society, the Mary Vinson Memorial Library Board, the Milledgeville Historic Preservation Commission, Friends of Fort Worth Public Library, and several other community organizations and statewide boards including the Georgia Humanities Council and the Georgia Historical Society. Outside of his practical work in his field, Dr. Armstrong is a member of the advisory board of the journal, Teaching History, has contributed many articles to professional journals, and was a reviewer for numerous industry publications.

For his achievements as an educator, Dr. Armstrong received the Liberty Bell Award from the Baldwin County Bar Association, a Meritorious Service Award from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and the William Bone Key Award from the Georgia College Alumni Association. He also received a Thomas Jefferson fellowship from the University of Virginia. In order to remain aware of developments in his field, Dr. Armstrong has maintained affiliation with the American Association for Higher Education, the Georgia Association of Historians, the Southern Historical Association, the Georgia Historical Society, the Organization of American Historians, the Deans and Assistant Deans of the University System of Georgia, Rotary International, Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi.
