NEW YORK, NY, August 02, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Norma Graham, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Graham celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

With many years of experience in research and teaching, Dr. Graham has worked as a centennial professor of psychology for Columbia University since 2013. Prior to this appointment, she held the positions of William B. Ransford professor of psychology from 2009 to 2012 and a professor in the Department of Psychology from 1982 to 2009. Previously, she was an associate professor from 1976 to 1982, having begun her career as assistant professor from 1972 to 1976. Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Graham pursued an education at Stanford University, earning a Bachelor of Science in mathematics in 1966. She then continued her studies at the University of Pennsylvania, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in psychology in 1970. This was followed by a post-doctoral fellowship in visual neuroscience at The Rockefeller University from 1970 to 1972.

Dr. Graham has published many scientific articles and chapters about visual perception and computational modelling, her fields of expertise. She also authored a book Visual Pattern Analyzers in 1989 which remains a standard in its field. She and her colleagues attempt to describe the "hidden stages" of visual processing. These are the many stages that exist between the light entering a person's eyes and that person's perceptions of the visual scene producing that light. She and her colleagues derive predictions from mathematical theories about how these hidden stages might work. They compare these theoretical predictions to results from behavioral experiments in which human observers report on their visual perceptions. Lately she has been interested in the effects of a preceding visual scene on the perception of the current visual scene.

Her contributions to Columbia University beyond teaching and research include serving as the chair of the Task Force for Diversity in the Sciences and Engineering from 2004 to 2007, on the Advisory Search Committee for the College Dean in 2012, and on the Committee on Global Thought in 2013. She has also served in many roles inside the psychology department including being assistant chair and then chair of the department from 2003 to 2010.

In addition to her positions at Columbia University, Dr. Graham has been affiliated with various scientific organizations including the Association for Psychological Science, the Society for Experimental Psychologists, the Association for Research in Vision and Opthalmology, the Visual Sciences Society, the Optical Society of America, and the Society for Neuroscience.

She has served these organizations in various capacities over a period of decades including reviewing and editing for a wide variety of scientific journals.

Dr. Graham has received several honors throughout her career. She was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1993 and to the National Academy of Sciences in 1998. She was recognized as a Fellow of several organizations including the Optical Society of America in 1996, the American Psychological Association in 1992, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2016. Dr. Graham was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who of American Women.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to her profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Dr. Graham has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
