The Rev. Dr. Davies retired from Bangor Theological Seminary in 2011 as the Jonathan Professor, and has been known for her work with theological and other religious leaders around the world on feminist, economic, and environmental issues. During her tenure at the seminary, she served as Academic Dean, taught feminist/womanist/mujerista theologies, pastoral studies, critical thinking skills, and theologies in the global South, and was responsible for opening the curriculum to courses on gender, race, class, and feminist ethics. She also served as an Adjunct Professor at New York Theological Seminary in their Doctor of Ministry program. Prior to her years at Bangor Seminary, she served as the Pastor of the Union Congregational Church in Hancock, ME, as the Assistant Minister at the First Congregational Church in Ridgefield, CT, as the College Department Coordinator at the First Presbyterian Church in Berkeley, CA, and as a sixth grade teacher in Arlington, MA and Pennsauken, NJ.
Throughout her career, Dr. Davies has been known for supporting gay students in their struggles, and worked with churches during the 1980s and 1990s to move the gay community from the margins to the center of the culture, despite resistance and hostility from some church members. She has also been outspoken in support of same-sex marriage. Writing extensively in her fields, Dr. Davies as served as co-editor and editor for several books and other publications, and has written many academic papers, often with a focus on theology and justice. She is also a founding member of the Eleanor Humes Haney Fund Board of Maine, which "seeks social justice in a wounded and troubled world. Active in the ecumenical and interfaith worlds, during the 2000s Dr. Davies served as Moderator of the Faith and Order Commission of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA, as Co-Moderator of the Global Covenanting for Justice in the Economy and the Earth of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, and as a member of the Board of Commissioners for Accreditation of the Association of Theological Schools in the U.S. and Canada. She currently serves as the Convener of the Transformative Theology working group of OIkotree International. Formed by the World Council of Churches, the World Alliance of Reformed Churches and the Council for World Mission, Oikotree is an ecumenical space open to people of all faiths, and is a movement of those seeking to live faithfully in the midst of economic injustice and ecological destruction. As part of her Oikotree work, she is one of three Conveners planning the Life-Enhancing Learning Together (LELT) workshop for theological students from the Caribbean, the U.S., Canada, and First Nations.
The first 'lady minister' at the Union Congregational Church in Hancock, ME, in 1977, Dr. Davies was ordained in 1973 by the Fairfield East Association of the Connecticut Conference of the United Church of Christ. As a child and young person, she was very involved with her home church, Bushnell Congregational Church in Detroit, MI. She served as an officer of state youth groups, and was a Youth Delegate to the 1959 Uniting General Synod of the United Church of Christ. The next year she enrolled at Wellesley College, where she majored in Biblical History and minored in Philosophy. She later did a Master of Arts in Theology at Andover Newton Theological School (Thesis: "Athanasius' Political Theology"), a Doctor of Ministry degree at New York Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Education at Columbia University Teachers College and Union Theological Seminary in New York.
In 2011, the Susan E. Davies and Glenn T. Miller Tribute Fund was established by the Trustees of Bangor Theological Seminary to support students who "seek to know God and to experience community in an unfamiliar place". Dr. Davies was one of three women to receive the Maryann Hartman Award in 2011 from the University of Maine's Women in the Curriculum and Women's Studies Program. She also received the Avery D. Post Ecumenical Award from the United Church of Christ in 2015 and the Morehouse College Martin Luther King Jr. International Collegium of Scholars Award in 2008. She has been included in the 66th edition of Who's Who in America.
