With nearly 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Friedman served as an educator and practitioner of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery with several institutions. He was The Professor and Chairman of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at the St. Louis University School of Medicine from 1977 to 1987. He served as Professor of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons from 1987 to 1990. He was an Associate Professor of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City from 1974 through 1976. He was an Associate Clinical Professor of Otolaryngology at the Harvard Medical School from 1976 to 1977.

Clinically, Dr. Friedman was the Chief of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at the Firmin Desloges and Cardinal Glennon Hospitals of the St. Louis University School of Medicine from 1977 to 1988. Prior to that he was an Associate Attending Otolaryngologist at the Mt. Sinai Hospital and Chief of Otolaryngology at the City Hospital Center of Elmhurst in New York City from 1971 through 1976. He was an Attending Surgeon at the Deaconess Hospital in St. Louis from 1987 to 2001. He was an Associate Attending Physician at the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary from 1976 to 1977. He was the Attending and Chief of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at the Roosevelt-St. Luke's Hospital in New York City from 1987 to 1991.

Dr. Friedman began his career as a student at Washington University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1960 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1964. He subsequently served as an intern with Jackson Memorial Hospital until 1965, and he joined Mount Sinai Hospital for a residency in surgery and otolaryngology from 1965 to 1970, and he was recognized as a National Institutes of Health Fellow in Head and Neck Surgery from 1966 to 1967. Dr. Friedman is a diplomate of the American Board of Otolaryngology and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Best known for his innovative work in face lift, eyelid, and head and neck cancer surgery, Dr. Friedman performed the first facelift ever to be done in Hungary at the request of the Hungarian Government in 1981. He performed the first tongue replacement in St. Louis, Missouri in the 1980's. He is the author of over two hundred scientific publications and abstracts including book chapters and one textbook. Throughout his career, Dr. Friedman has been recognized for his contributions, including with the Ira Tresley Award from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 1976. The American Medical Association awarded him the Hektoen Gold Medal in 1979 and the Hektoen Bronze Medal in 1968. He received the Sander Csyrnyes Award from the Government of Hungary in 1981. Dr. Friedman has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the Midwest.
