Benjamin P. Lewis, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Lewis, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Since 2008, Dr. Lewis was the principal and president of Lewis Regulatory Consulting, LLC. The former head of regulatory affairs in North America for Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Development America, Inc., vice president of regulatory affairs for Prestwick Pharmaceutical, Inc., and managing director for Brand Institute, Inc., his career in the pharmaceutical industry dates back to 1972 when he first taught as an instructor at the Harrison School of Pharmacy at Auburn University in Alabama. Dr. Lewis later served as an adjunct professor at Auburn University for 14 years.

Earning the opportunity to take on an assignment by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) at San Diego State University to design, create and develop one of the first MS degrees in regulatory affairs and regulatory sciences in the U.S. in 1998, Dr. Lewis also created the Society of FDA Pharmacists in 1978. During his career, he successfully created and obtained FDA approval of various brand names for marketed pharmaceuticals while working for Brand Institute. Meanwhile, he successfully led regulatory development and FDA approval of the first drug for Huntington's disease while at Prestwick. Dr. Lewis also filed INDs and NDAs for drug and orphan drug products globally to the FDA, Health Canada and EU for pharmaceutical companies.

Dr. Lewis has found much success with his written works, having held the positions of author, co-author, editor, co-editor and contributor of several works in the field, including "Poliovirus Attenuation: Molecular Mechanisms and Practical Aspects" in 1993 and "Combined Vaccines and Simultaneous Administration" in 1995. He is also a member of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States, the Regulatory Affairs Professional Society, the Drug Information Association, among others. Dr. Lewis served as a captain in the medical service corps for the U.S. Army between 1972 and 1976.

In 1966, Dr. Lewis earned a Bachelor of Science at Auburn University. He followed this accomplishment with a Master of Science in pharmacy in 1972, also at Auburn University. Shortly after, he graduated from the U.S. Army School of Aviation Medicine as a flight surgeon. Sixteen years later, he received a Doctor of Philosophy in health services management at Century University in 1989 (in collaboration with Auburn Univ-Pharmacy, Howard Univ-Medicine and Penn State-Medicine) and completed postgraduate work in public health at Johns Hopkins University in 1993. Dr. Lewis holds an Alabama pharmacy license since 1966, registration as a pharmacist in both Alabama and Kentucky, credentials with the Food and Drug Administration and certification as an FDA inspector.

Honored many times for his accomplishments, some of Dr. Lewis' awards have included a DHHS Secretary's Award for Distinguished Service for Outstanding Performance and Teamwork, a Crisis Response Service Award from the UHPHS and an Achievement Medal for FDA Regulatory Management from the FDA. He has been included in approximately 30 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in the World. Likewise, Dr. Lewis has long been married to Patricia Glover since 1968, with whom he has had two children.
