William Kerr Celebrated for 50 Years of Professional Excellence

Mr. Kerr, a professor emeritus at Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis, is honored by Marquis Who's Who for his 50-year career as an attorney, law professor, and author



    INDIANAPOLIS, IN, August 09, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- William A. Kerr has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

With nearly 50 years of professional experience, Mr. Kerr was most recently a contract attorney with the Indianapolis Public Defender Agency from 1998 to 2007. In addition, he has been a professor since 1974, an associate professor since 1972, and associate professor from 1968 to 1969. From 1969 to 1972, Mr. Kerr served as an assistant United States attorney with the Southern District of Indiana. From 1967 to 1968, he was an associate professor of law with Cleveland State University, having been an assistant professor with the school from 1966 to 1967. Earlier in his career, he was an associate with Schnader, Harrison, Segal and Lewis in Philadelphia from 1961 to 1964, an associate with McClintic, James, Wise and Robinson in Charleston, WV, in 1958, and a member of the United States Air Force Judge Advocate General's Corps from 1958 to 1961.

Mr. Kerr grew up in a small town in West Virginia where there were no attorneys, and he had never met an attorney or been in a courtroom when he decided as a high school senior that he wanted to become an attorney so that he could help people and help to solve problems. He began his career as a student at West Virginia University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1955 with membership in Phi Beta Kappa, and a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree in 1957 with membership in The Order of the Coif. He then received a Ford Foundation Fellowship from Harvard Law School, and earned a Master of Laws degree there in 1958. In 1968, he concluded his formal studies at Duke University, earning a Bachelor of Divinity degree.

Active as a member of the legal profession. Mr. Kerr has been affiliated with numerous professional organizations. He was a member of the Indiana State Bar Association, the Indianapolis Bar Association, the Philadelphia Bar Association and the West Virginia State Bar. He was also a member of the National District Attorneys Association, the American Judicature Society, and the Federal Bar Association. He also served as executive director of the Indiana Judicial Center from 1974 to 1986, director of research for the Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council from 1972 to 1974, secretary of the Indiana Criminal Law Study Commission, member of the board of directors for the Indianapolis Lawyers Commission, and member of the Indiana Lawyers Commission. A trustee of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, he also served as a reporter for the speedy trial committee of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana and as a member of the records management committee for the Indiana Supreme Court. The author of "Indiana Criminal Procedure: Pretrial," and "Indiana Criminal Procedure: Trial," Mr. Kerr also served as a member of the board of directors for the Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis.

Throughout his career, Mr. Kerr has been recognized for his contributions. He received the first Distinguished Service Award from the Indiana Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges and an Outstanding Judicial Education Program Award from the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges for the juvenile court programs conducted by the Indiana Judicial Center. He was given an Outstanding Professor Award by the students at the McKinney School of Law and an Outstanding Service Award from the Indianapolis Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. At the end of his active service in the United States Air Force Judge Advocate General's Corps, he was decorated with an Air Force Commendation Medal.
