With 65 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Knuth has been recognized as professor emeritus by the University of California, Los Angeles, since 1991. Prior to this appointment, he held multiple positions at UCLA, including professor of engineering and applied sciences from 1965 to 1991, head of the molecular-beam laboratory from 1961 to 1988, chairman of the energy and kinetics department from 1969 to 1975, and head of the chemical, nuclear and thermal division of the department of engineering from 1963 to 1965. Previously, he served UCLA as an associate professor of engineering from 1960 to 1965 and associate research engineer from 1956 to 1959. Dr. Knuth began his career as an aerothermodynamics group leader for the Aerophysics Development Corporation from 1953 to 1956.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Knuth completed service with the United States Army from 1943 to 1945. Following this accomplishment, he pursued an education at Purdue University, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1949. He continued his academic efforts with a Master of Science in 1950, also at Purdue University. Dr. Knuth concluded his studies at the California Institute of Technology in 1953, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Knuth has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. From 2000 to 2014, he contributed to the international advisory committee for the International Symposium on Rarefied Gas Dynamics. Furthermore, he has held the roles of general chairman for the Heat Transfer and Fluid Mechanics Institute in 1959 and visiting scientist for the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization from 1975 to 1976. Dr. Knuth found success with his written works as well, having authored "Introduction to Statistical Thermodynamics" in 1966, "Who Wrote Those Letters?" in 2005, "Auf den Spuren von Jornjakob Swehn" in 2005, and myriad articles for esteemed journals.
In addition to his primary activities, Dr. Knuth remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has maintained involvement with the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Society for Engineering Education, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physical Society and the American Vacuum Society. He was also active with Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society; The Tau Beta Pi Association, Inc.; Alpha Gamma Rho; Pi Tau Sigma; Sigma Delta Chi; and the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. Furthermore, Dr. Knuth was a member of the Combustion Institute, the Society of Engineering Science, Inc., and the Gimlet Club.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Knuth has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. He was the recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship of the California Institute of Technology in 1953, as well as an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellowship of the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization from 1975 to 1976. He was presented with the Fritz Reuter Medal from Mecklenburg Landsmannschaft in 2002, the Literature Prize from the Johannes-Gillholf Society in 2009, and induction into the "Golden Book" of Ludwigslust, Mecklenburg, in 2015. Attributing his success to his numerous impactful mentors, Dr. Knuth was selected for inclusion in many editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.
