She continues to write art criticism for the international news group Blasting News based in Switzerland.
Ms. Altabe was greatly influenced by celebrated painter Robert Motherwell, who was her professor in graduate school. She credits her grandfather, a New York City high school art teacher, with her introduction into the field. He was her first art teacher beginning when she was 4 years old. Academically, Ms. Altabe holds a Bachelor of Art in fine arts from Hunter College, where she studied with Motherwell and also completed postgraduate study in both fine art (painting, sculpture, and graphics) and art education. She is a certified New York City secondary school art teacher. Throughout her career, Ms. Altabe has served as an art teacher, artist, and an art and architecture critic. In the latter category, she served as a staff writer (art and architecture critic) for The New York Times-owned Sarasota Herald-Tribune and a free-lancer for the Robb Report, Art and Antique Magazine and Art Press, Paris, France, among others. She also authored two books on art, one on painting titled "Art Behind the Scenes" and one on sculpture titled "Sculpture Off the Pedestal."
In addition to her art writing, Ms. Altabe has several museum exhibit credits throughout the United States, including New York's Museum of Modern Art under the auspice of the Smithsonian Institution. She also volunteered as a sculpture teacher at the New York Lighthouse for the Blind. She regularly appeared on two weekly television shows on a local news station on the west coast of Florida called "Fun with Art" and "Critic's Choice," where she would critique local public artwork and exhibitions.
