Tabachnick, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. A professor and former chair in the English department at the University of Memphis, Dr. Tabachnick has been a member of their faculty since 2000. Specializing in English literature, he formerly taught and served as chairman from 1990-1993 and professor from 1990-2000 at the University of Oklahoma, and from 1985-1990 at Tennessee Technological University. Likewise, he was a visiting associate professor at the University of California at Los Angeles in 1984. Previously, Dr. Tabachnick was a lecturer, senior lecturer, and associate professor at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beersheva, Israel for 13 years beginning in 1971.

Dr. Tabachnick has taught both graduate and undergraduate level courses, including The Graphic Novel, Contemporary British and Commonwealth Literature, Romanticism, Neglected Literature and British Travel Literature, among many others. He supervised multiple PhD students, served formally as an external examiner for the PhD dissertations of four students, directed several BA honors theses as well as several MA theses, and served on several MA, MFA and PhD committees. During the course of his career, Dr. Tabachnick also spent time as a visiting adjunct professor at San Diego State University in the department of English and comparative literature and was a visiting part-time lecturer in the American studies department at Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Active in his field, Dr. Tabachnick is a longstanding member of the Modern Language Association of America, for which he edited the essay collection "Teaching the Graphic Novel". He has been active on various committees, serving on the editorial board of and as a reader for "English Literature in Transition: 1880-1920" for over 30 years as well as on the editorial board and as a reader for "The Explicator" since 2011. Dr. Tabachnick is currently on the board of "Studies in the Novel", where he served as a guest-editor for a special issue on the graphic novel, which was published in 2015.

Dr. Tabachnick has authored, co-authored, edited and co-edited 13 academic books, contributed to over 40 refereed journal publications and book chapters, authored five encyclopedia articles and reviewed more than 50 books. He has presented at dozens of conferences across the country and abroad. Notably, Dr. Tabachnick speaks and writes fluent Hebrew and can read in both Spanish and French.

Dr. Tabachnick holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Near Eastern Languages with distinction from the University of California at Berkeley, a Master of Arts in English Literature from the University of Chicago and a Doctor of Philosophy in English Literature with distinction from the University of Connecticut. He has further received an Alumni Award from the University of Memphis for Distinguished Research in the Humanities in 2016 and the University of Memphis Dunavant Professorship since 2017. Furthermore, Dr. Tabachnick has been cited in approximately 10 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
