Lester Andrews, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Andrews has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in chemistry research

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA, August 15, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Lester Andrews, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Andrews celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

The son of an agronomy professor at Mississippi State University (MSU) and a classically trained pianist, Dr. Andrews grew up surrounded by education, as he spent much of his childhood on the MSU campus. It stood to reason that he would go on to earn a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering, with highest honors, from MSU in 1963 and a Doctor of Philosophy in physical chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, three years later. He immediately became an assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Virginia, where he was promoted to associate professor and full professor, serving in the latter role until 2008 when he gained emeritus status.

In addition to his role in the classroom, Dr. Andrews was a prolific researcher and author who published more than 850 papers over the course of 50 years. He also edited "Chemistry and Physics of Matrix-Isolated Species," which was published in 1989, and served on the editorial board of the Journal of Molecular Structure. In March 2018, he was profiled in a special virtual issue of the Journal of Physical Chemistry A, titled "W. Lester S. Andrews Festschrift."

Named a fellow in chemical engineering by MSU in 2002, an honorary doctorate D. H.C. from the Universite Paul Sabatier, Toulouse, France, in 2004, Dr. Andrews is also a fellow of the American Physical Society, as well as a member of the American Chemical Society. He is highly regarded for his matrix-isolation spectroscopy research, which examines the individual molecules of chemical compounds at very low temperatures. His work is integral to understanding the chemical bonding processes of many elements and has been cited more than 18,000 times. The Lester Andrews Graduate Research Symposium was created in his honor at MSU as a result of his contributions to the discipline of chemistry as a whole.

In recognition of his contributions to his field, Dr. Andrews has received several honors, including the Coblentz Award for spectroscopy, Lippincott Vibrational Spectroscopy Award, a Distinguished Scientist Award from the University of Virginia, and the Plyler Prize from the American Physical Society. He also received grants from the National Science Foundation, which supported most of his career research, and several Petroleum Research Fund and Air Force Office of Scientific Research grants. Outside of his career, Dr. Andrews has been involved with the Boy Scouts of America and served as a Little League baseball coach.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Dr. Andrews has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
