David Hafemeister, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

With 50 years of government and experience to his credit, Dr. Hafemeister is currently retired, having most recently worked on the staff for the Federation of American Scientists from 2015 to 2016 and on the external review board for the Global Security Directorate with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 2010 to 2016. Prior to these appointments, he held the position of senior technical advisor for the Arms Control Association in 2009, the chair of the external review committee for the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division with the Los Alamos National Laboratory from 2003 to 2006, and director of the study on arms control beyond START, as well as on the technical staff for nuclear testing, for the National Academy of Sciences from 2000 to 2002. Previously, he served the California Polytechnic State University as a professor of physics from 1969 to 2000. Dr. Hafemeister began his career as an assistant professor of physics for Carnegie Mellon University from 1966 to 1969.

Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Hafemeister pursued an education at the University of Illinois, earning a Master of Science in physics in 1959. He concluded his studies at the University of Illinois in 1964, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in physics. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Hafemeister was a visiting scientist at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands in 1971 and 1980.

Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Hafemeister has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He has held the role of scientific advisor for U.S. Senator John Glenn from 1975 to 1977, special assistant to Undersecretary of State Lucy Benson and Deputy Undersecretary Joe Nye for the U.S. Department of State from 1977 to 1979, on the staff for the Office of Strategic Nuclear Policy for the U.S. Department of State in 1987, on the professional staff for the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations from 1990 to 1992, and on the professional staff for the United States Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs from 1992 to 1993. Dr. Hafemeister contributed to the Program on Science, Technology and Society in International Security at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1983 to 1984, the Center for Building Science at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory from 1985 to 1986, the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University in 1988 and 2005-06, the Program on Nuclear Policy Alternatives at Princeton University in 1989, and the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland in 1996.

Dr. Hafemeister found success with his written works as well, having authored "Physics of Societal Issues: Calculations on National Security, Environment and Energy" in 2007 and 2014, and "Nuclear Proliferation and Terrorism in the Post-9/11 World" in 2016. In 1983, he was the co-author of "Physics of Modern Architecture." The co-editor of "Energy Sources: Conservation and Renewables" since 1985, he has held the same post with "Nuclear Weapons and Related Security Issues" in 1997, "Nuclear Weapon Issues in the 21st Century" in 2014, "Physics of Sustainable Energy" in 2008 and 2011, "Biological Effects of Low-Frequency Electromagnetic Fields" in 1998, and "Global Warming: Physics and Facts" in 1991. Likewise, Dr. Hafemeister excelled as co-editor of "Physics and Nuclear Arms Today" in 1990, "Nuclear Arms Technologies in the 1990s" in 1988, and "Arms Control Verification" in 1986.

In addition to his primary vocation, Dr. Hafemeister remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has maintained involvement as the co-editor of books for the American Institute of Physics. He was also active with the American Physical Society as chairman for the Forum on Physics and Society from 1985 to 1986 and chair on the Panel on Public Affairs in 1996. Dr. Hafemeister was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Federation of American Scientists and the Arms Control Association.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Hafemeister has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. He has been the recipient of a fellowship from the American Physical Society, a science fellowship at Stanford University from the Center for International Security and Cooperation from 2005 to 2006, a Foster fellowship from the Office of Strategic Negotiations at the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency from 1997 to 1998, an Arms Control fellowship from the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1987, and a Congressional fellowship from the American Association for the Advancement of Science from 1975 to 1976. He was presented with the Leo Szilard Award for Physics in the Public Interest from the American Physical Society in 1996. Dr. Hafemeister was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.
