Professor emerita at Howard University in Washington, DC, since 1993, Dr. Jones-Wilson taught at the university for 24 years beginning in 1969 and was the acting dean of the School of Education from 1991 to 1992. Prior to accepting her faculty position at Howard University, she taught adult education at the University of the District of Columbia and in the College of Education at the University of Illinois between 1967 and 1971. She was also a teacher and school librarian at Gary Public Schools in Indiana from 1955 to 1962 and again from 1964 to 1967. Coming from a long line of educators, Dr. Jones-Wilson's grandfather was notably a teacher, principal and associate state superintendent of Negro Education in Arkansas.
The author of "The Changing Mood in America: Eroding Commitment?" in 1977 and "A Traditional Model of Educational Excellence: Dunbar High School of Little Rock, Arkansas" in 1981, Dr. Jones-Wilson also co-authored "Paul Laurence Dunbar High School of Little Rock, Arkansas: Take From Our Lips a Song, Dunbar to Thee" in 2003. Furthermore, she served as the first female editor of the Journal of Negro Education from 1978 to 1991 and again from 1992 to 1993, was the co-editor of the Encyclopedia of African American Education in 1996, and associate editor of the Journal of Education for Students Placed at Risk from 1996 to 2000.
Serving on the board of directors for the National Council on Educating Black Children since 2005, where she previously served in the same capacity from 1994 to 1998, Dr. Jones-Wilson was also active as the organization's third vice president and as the chairman of the East Coast steering committee. A member of several professional organizations, including the Society of Professors of Education, where she received a Mary Anne Raywid Award in 2002, and the John Dewey Society, she is also a member and former president of the American Educational Studies Association and member and former president of the Howard University chapter of Phi Delta Kappa.
Dr. Jones-Wilson received several awards and recognitions for her dedication to the field, including a 1993 Distinguished Career Award from the vice president of academic affairs at Howard University, 1990 Gertrude E. Rush Award from the National Bar Association and 1985 Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Award from Howard University. She was the recipient of a Phelps Stokes Fund Senior Fellowship from 1993 to 2000 as well and has been highlighted in more than 45 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women. Dr. Jones-Wilson holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Master of Arts and Doctor of Education from the University of Illinois, and a Doctor of Laws from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. She holds multiple teaching licenses, including a regional high school first grade social studies option I, issued by the state of Indiana.
