Dr. Miller is a retired publishing executive who devoted more than 40 years to the field, ultimately leaving in 1997 after a four-year stint as president and editor of "The Monterey County Herald," a daily newspaper in Monterey County, Calif. Her career in newspapers also included service as the vice president of editorial and director of editorial development for "Scripps Howard Newspapers" in Cincinnati, executive editor for "The News-Gazette" in Champaign, Illinois, night city editor for the "Peninsula Times Tribune" in Palo Alto, Calif. and news-features editor for the "Bremerton Sun" in Washington. Dr. Miller was also an information officer for the Montgomery County Schools in Rockville, Maryland and the Palo Alto Unified School District in Palo Alto, Calif.
Beginning a passion for journalism in high school, Dr. Miller worked for her community newspapers part-time from 1962-64 until she went away to college. Earning a bachelor's degree at Stanford University in 1966 and master's degree at Columbia University in 1969, she realized the advantage of an advanced degree in her field. After earning a PhD back at Stanford, she secured a reporting position covering the nuclear Navy and Bremerton Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash. At the conclusion of her newspaper career, Dr. Miller enrolled in the Graduate Theological Union and acquired an MDiv from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in 2003. She spent another five years working as a chaplain for the John XXIII AIDS Ministry in Salinas, Calif. and as a vicar at St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Seaside, Calif.
Dr. Miller has been recognized as the first person to discover and document the gap in women's readership of U.S. newspapers starting in the late 1970s, with women reading daily newspapers far less often than men. She has since become an international authority on increasing women's readership. She has contributed numerous articles to professional journals, and has presented programs to newspaper groups both in the U.S. and abroad. During her career, she also served on the board of directors for "New Direction News," the "Washington Journalism Center," the "Illinois Associated Press of Managing Editors," the "Associated Press of Managing Editors" and the "American Society of Newspaper Editors." She was a member of the Pulitzer Prize Nominating Committee for several years as well.
Locally involved since 2010 as president and board member of the Monterey State Historic Park Association, Dr. Miller also has been also a board member and volunteer with the Yellow Brick Road Benefit Shop. She previously served as a board member for the Alliance on Aging and the World Affairs Council.
Honored for her contributions in her field, Dr. Miller has been showcased in nearly a dozen editions of Who's Who. She has been cited in the 48th, 49th, 50th and 52nd editions of Who's Who in America, as well as several editions of Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders of America.
