A prominent and respected figure in the field of religious services, Dr. Woodruff amassed more than 50 years of professional experience prior to his retirement in 2014. Most recently serving as a clinical supervisor in the Department of Pastoral Counseling at Loyola University Maryland from 2012 to 2014, he was formerly an interim pastor at the Vienna Baptist Church from 2004 to 2006, an executive director of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors from 1988 to 2003, a clinical instructor of the Navy Chaplain Residency Program at Portsmouth Navy Hospital from 1980 to 1989, and an executive director of the Peninsula Pastoral Counseling Center from 1978 to 1988. Likewise, he was the associate professor and chairman of the Department of Psychology of Religion and Pastoral Care at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary from 1976 to 1978, an associate professor and chaplain supervisor in the department of patient counseling at the Medical College of Virginia from 1971 to 1976, and the director of the department of pastoral care and education at Bryce State Hospital from 1966 to 1971. Dr. Woodruff began his career as an assistant pastor at Fort Mitchell Baptist Church from 1960 to 1963 and a Protestant chaplain at Silvercrest Hospital from 1963 to 1966.

Alongside his primary endeavors, Dr. Woodruff was a lecturing fellow at The Interpreter's House in Lake Junaluska, NC, from 1968 to 1978, a pastoral counselor and clinical supervisor of the Psychological Clinic at the University of Alabama from 1969 to 1971, and an adjunct staff member of the Counseling Institute from 1976 to 1978. He was also an adjunct professor at the John Leland Center for Theological Studies, visiting professor at the Korea Professional Psychotherapy Institute in Seoul, Republic of Korea, Wayne E. Oates visiting professor at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1998, and a pastoral care consultant for the National Alliance for Children of Alcoholics. Notably appointed by the Governor of Virginia to the Board of Professional Counselors, Dr. Woodruff was a member of the National Mental Health Leadership Forum and the president of the Coalition on Ministry in Specialized Settings.

To prepare for his illustrious career, Dr. Woodruff pursued formal education at the University of Alabama, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1960. He subsequently attended the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he received a Bachelor of Divinity and Doctor of Philosophy in the psychology of religion and pastoral care in 1963 and 1966, respectively. He has since become a licensed professional counselor in the state of Virginia, as well as a diplomate of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors.

In an effort to remain aware of recent developments within the industry, Dr. Woodruff maintains retired affiliation with several professional societies, including the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education and the Association of Couples for Marriage Enrichment. A prolific author, Dr. Woodruff has further contributed myriad articles to professional journals throughout his career and was the author and co-author of several works, including "Alcoholism and Christian Experience," "Spiritual Care for Addicted Persons and Families," "Alcohol, In and Out of the Church," and "The Dictionary of Pastoral Care and Counseling," among others.

In light of his exceptional accomplishments, Dr. Woodruff has accrued several accolades. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Virginia Institute for Pastoral Care in 2002, the Distinguished Contributions Award from the American Association of Pastoral Counselors in 2003, and an Award from the Wayne E. Oates Institute in 2004. Likewise, Dr. Woodruff received a grant from the United Methodist Church General Board of Christian Social Concerns in 1965 and was a Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Teaching Fellow from 1963 to 1966.

Married to Kay Carolyn Jernigan since 1962, Dr. Woodruff is the proud father of two sons, Charles Jr. and Earl. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, writing, hiking and spending time with his family. Notably, Dr. Woodruff was selected for inclusion in several editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Religion.
