With more than 60 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Ramakumar has worked at Oklahoma State University as a Regents professor since 2008, PSO/Albrecht Naeter professor since 1991, director of the Engineering Energy Laboratory since 1987, and a professor of electrical engineering since 1976. Prior to these appointments, he held the positions of visiting and associate professor for Oklahoma State University from 1967 to 1976. Previously, he served Coimbatore Institute of Technology as an assistant professor from 1962 to 1967. Dr. Ramakumar began his career as an assistant lecturer and lecturer in electrical engineering at Coimbatore Institute of Technology from 1957 to 1959.

Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Ramakumar pursued an education at the University of Madras, earning a Bachelor of Engineering in 1956. He continued his academic efforts with a Master of Technology at the Indian Institutes of Technology in 1957. He concluded his studies at Cornell University in 1962, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Ramakumar obtained a number of patents in his industry, including 4 patents in the United States.

Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Ramakumar has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. Between 1978 and 1979, he has held the role of consultant for the United Nations, United Nations University, the National Science Foundation, Kuwait University and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. He has further contributed to renewable energy efforts at Oklahoma State University, which was among the first institutions to do so. Dr. Ramakumar found success with his written works as well, having authored articles for esteemed journals and a textbook, "Engineering Reliability: Fundamentals and Applications," in 1993.

In addition to his primary vocation, Dr. Ramakumar remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has maintained involvement with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), including as chair of the IEEE Power and Energy Society and on the renewable technology subcommittee. Dr. Ramakumar was also active as a member of the Oklahoma Society of Professional Engineers, the International Solar Energy Society and the American Solar Energy Society.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Ramakumar has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. He was recognized as a lifetime fellow of the IEEE Power and Energy Society, as well as an inductee of the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame. Likewise, he was presented with the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Oklahoma Society of Professional Engineers in 1972, a Grant from the National Science Foundation in 1975, and a TCM Scholarship from 1959 to 1962. Dr. Ramakumar was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
