Earlier in his career, he became a trial attorney for Northwestern Mutual Insurance Company. From there, he gained experience with Unigard Security Insurance Company, Groshong, LeHet & Thornton, the Washington House of Representatives, the Washington Commission on Judicial Conduct, the Seattle Municipal Court and Arbitration Forums, Inc. A former first lieutenant in the U.S. Army, Mr. Loftus also served as a colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve for more than 30 years.
When he first started in the military, Mr. Loftus attended the University of Washington, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1952 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1957. Due to the ever-changing nature of the legal field, he maintains affiliation with the Washington State Association for Justice, the Defense Research Institute, the American Judicature Society, the International Association of Defense Counsel and the American Arbitration Association, among many others. Throughout his career, he made it a point to give back to those less fortunate through a plethora of executive roles with such organizations as the Arson Alarm Foundation, the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center and the University of Washington School of Law.
