WINSTON-SALEM, NC, September 04, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present George D. Newton Jr. with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Newton celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Mr. Newton retired in 1991 after a successful career representing RJR Nabisco, Inc., in Winston-Salem, NC, as their vice president and deputy general counsel. Hired in 1985, it was the same year that the company was formed by the merger of Nabisco Brands and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Within just five months with the organization, Mr. Newton helped win two important smoker cases in Kentucky and California. Never losing a case during his tenure with the organization, he retired when it was sold to Kohlberg, Kravis and Roberts & Company.

Prior to his years with RJR, Mr. Newton was an associate and partner at Kirkland & Ellis of Chicago between 1958 and 1985, a law firm that provides a full spectrum of litigation, corporate, real estate, intellectual property, restructuring, tax, benefits and estates service. During his 28-year career with the firm, he worked on various cases defending such corporations as Firestone, General Motors and Westinghouse.

During the late 1960s, Mr. Newton served as a director of the taskforce on firearms for the National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence in Washington, DC. He later taught a course on complex civil litigation at Wake Forest University School of Law for 12 years from 1991 to 2003. He is the author of the 1969 book "Firearms and Violence in American Life" and the 2017 book "My Life Inside Big-Case Litigation: A Memoir." Fortunate to have enjoyed such a satisfying career, the memoir was written to share his many wonderful experiences in the field and to acknowledge some of the talented people with whom he had the pleasure of working.

Earning a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, at Harvard University in 1953 and a Bachelor of Laws at Yale University in 1958, Mr. Newton has since been admitted to the Illinois and North Carolina Bar Associations. He notably served two years in the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps in the Republic of Korea from 1954 to 1955.

Born in Rochester, NY, Mr. Newton was exposed to the legal field early on. His father, who was a Harvard Law School graduate, maintained his own private practice in Geneseo, NY, for many years, served as an elected county judge and spent six years as Justice of the Supreme Court of New York. Mr. Newton's grandfather was also a successful trial attorney in western New York who became a state senator in 1914 and later served as attorney general of New York State from 1918 to 1922.

Married to Marja H. Newton since July 1955, Mr. Newton has four children, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A former scuba diver of nearly 30 years, he has been a longtime member of Indian Hill, Landings, Old Town, Piedmont. He also enjoys collecting stamps and coins and following tennis and baseball.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, George D. Newton Jr. has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
