Dr. McBride holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Georgetown University, a Master of Science in psychiatric-mental health nursing from Yale University, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Purdue University. She is a diplomate through the Harvard University Institute for Educational Management and has also received seven honorary doctorates from institutions such as Georgetown University and Purdue University, among others. Dr. McBride began her prolific career as a staff nurse at Phipps Clinic of Johns Hopkins Hospital and went on for the next 56 years to serve at various health and medical centers, hospitals, and universities as a nurse, director, lecturer, professor, researcher and dean. Today, Dr. McBride holds the titles of Distinguished Professor and University Dean Emeritus of the Indiana University School of Nursing. Additionally, as an expert in her field, she has served as an adviser and sat on various advisory boards and committees regarding women's health, nursing and mental health.

Known for her lasting influence in healthcare fields such as women's health, parenting and psychiatric nursing, Dr. McBride is also a prolific writer, having authored four books and edited several others. Her first book, "The Growth and Development of Mothers," was recognized as one of the best books of the year in The New York Times and the American Journal of Nursing. In addition, her book "Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing: Integrating the Behavioral and Biological Sciences" received the Book of the Year Award from the American Journal of Nursing in 1996. Most recently, her book, "The Growth and Development of Nurse Leaders" won the Prose Award for the category Nursing and Allied Health in 2011. She has also contributed more than 300 scholarly articles to a wide range of professional journals and publications.

As a testament to her professional achievements, Dr. McBride has been given a host of professional honors and awards throughout her career. She received the Distinguished Alumna Award from multiple universities, was a Kellogg National fellow, and was named to the Yale School of Nursing Hall of Fame. Most notably, she was designated as a Living Legend by the American Academy of Nursing. Some of her other awards and honors include the Presidential Medal from Indiana University, election to the National Academy of Medicine, the President's Award from the National League of Nursing, the University Medallion from the University of San Francisco, and several book awards from prestigious organizations.

Civically, Dr. McBride has served as president of Sigma Theta Tau International, the honor society for nursing. During her time as president, she participated in the development of the International Center for Nursing Scholarship in Indianapolis, IN. She has also served as president of the American Academy of Nursing, chaired the national advisory committee for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Nurse Faculty Scholars Program, and was the founding chair of the national advisory council for the American Academy of Nursing's Institute for Nursing Leadership.
